Far House I was designed and built in 1914-1915 at a cost of $5,036. $1,000 came from Mrs. William Pettit in memory of William Atchison. It was the third dwelling constructed by the School and it took its name from the distance from the first two structures, Old Log and Big Log.

Unlike many of the other buildings, designed by the campus architect, Mary Rockwell Hook, Far House I was largely planned by Ethel de Long who exchanged ideas with Hook. The building planned as a dormitory was used as a dwelling by Ethel de Long until her marriage to Luigi Zande in 1918, and the construction of Zande House on the mountain just above Far House I.

By the 1990s the building was beyond repair, with sagging support beams riddled with termite damage and substantial structural instability. Burton and Mary Rogers were moved to the building from Big Log to make way for major reconstruction of that older building. The Rogers occupied the building until it was agreed by the Trustees that the building was to be torn down to make way for a new structure, Far House II.

We're thrilled to discover that a large number of our followers and supporters call Lexington home, so we thought it was time we met some of you in person! We're excited to announce that we'll be hosting a meetup at Mirror Twin Brewery on October 8th from 6-9pm, and we'd love for you to join us!

To make the evening even more special, we've collaborated with the brewery to create two signature drinks just for the occasion: the Lady L***r and Heart N' Craven. Don't worry, you definitely don't need to be a b**r enthusiast to join in on the fun - we just want to hang out and get to know the people who make our community so awesome! We'll have games, good company, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends, so mark your calendars for October 8th and come on down to Mirror Twin Brewery. We can't wait to see you at 730 National Ave, Lexington, KY 40502.

Calling all young artists and musicians ages 8–18! Join us every Monday through December 7 at Pine Mountain Settlement School for a free evening of creativity, community, and mountain music.

6:00–7:00 | Music Class

Learn to play banjo, guitar, fiddle, or ukulele. No experience needed, and everything is provided. It's all FREE!

Foraging with Savanna Schwartz | October 23–25

Spend a fall weekend in the woods at Pine Mountain learning to find, identify, and cook what grows wild in the holler.

Savanna is a lifelong Kentucky forager and the creator of Foraging Kentucky. She'll take you on guided hikes through the mountains and teach you to read the forest floor.
