Psalm 71:19
"For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens,
You who have done great things;
O God, who is like You?"
Let me tell you a story...
The idea for 'Walk a Mile in Their Shoes' is as old as these sneakers, 17+ years. While still dating we were a part of a small group that provided Christmas gifts and clothes to families needing a helping hand & Dave thought "wouldn't it be neat someday to have a ministry providing essentials, like shoes, to the community." And God gave him the name that's been sitting in the back of his head for "someday".
Jump forward to this month & our ministry is launched. The focus has shifted a bit but it's still on our heart to provide for the practical needs of our community. So how does a new looking pair of 17 year old shoes fit in? As a part of launching our ministry, our family has decided to radically trust for God's provision for both the ministry and our family. We've thrown almost everything into this ministry and are believing God's promises in Faith. And God is answering with a 17 year old pair of shoes!
What's so special about that, you may be asking. Good question! Our 13 year old is going to public school for the first time this year. School starts in a few short weeks and with going to public school instead of homeschool, he'll need some new clothes, school supplies and an extra pair of tennis shoes (for gym class). We're happily pinching pennies and making due, but he really needs new shoes for gym! So I'm in my prayer closet a few days ago and was quite frustrated with myself because I was unusually distracted. Hmm, the chips in the shelf look delicious, oh I haven't seen that scarf in awhile, hey this ancient pair of shoes that I completely forgot about should be donated...
See where I'm going? I thought the shoes were old mountain biking shoes & was quite surprised when I flipped them over & saw no cleats. It took me a minute to remember that they were almost brand new, really nice hiking shoes that no longer fit me after our eldest was born; that same 13 year old who now needs new shoes. Frustrated, I had thrown them in the bottom of the closet hoping my feet would fit them again. Somehow (probably because I thought they were my mountain biking shoes) they survived multiple moves & numerous purges, sitting forgotten on the bottom of my shoe rack (and if you know me, I don't have tons of shoes).
During my Bible reading tonight, I was contemplating God's provision and how long we'd have to wait for His promises. After all, Abraham had to wait 30+ years. Then God reminded me of those shoes...
On a whim, or God's prodding, I jumped up, grabbed the shoes & had our 13 year old try them on. You guessed it. They're a perfect fit!
And this is how God wrecks you with His love & care. An ancient, long forgotten pair of shoes from the same time period as when He first gave us the idea for Walk a Mile in their Shoes. Oh, and our 13 year old's name means "Who is like God"!
