"OLD PETE" — While on a road trip back in November 2019, I was able to stop and see some of the notable locations that General James Longstreet was connected with around his adopted, postwar hometown of Gainesville, Georgia. Specifically, these included his grave, home sites, death site, and the hotel he owned. Longstreet is one of my very favorite figures from the war and all of American history to study and it was very moving to check these off my Civil War travels bucket list.

Before his death on January, 2, 1904, James had been suffering from cancer of the eye and asked to be taken to the home of his daughter — Maria Louisa Longstreet Whelchel. After arriving there, his condition worsened and he developed pneumonia.

During a coughing spasm, his neck wound from the Battle of the Wilderness (Virginia) opened and it contributed to him bleeding to death. That wound was sustained 162 YEARS AGO today on May 6, 1864.

I typically don’t favor bringing up slavery. Our opponents will invariably bring it up for us, after all.

But it’s a debate that we have to be ready for and can actually do fairly well in if we’re properly educated on the subject and don’t try to defend it. It was awful…period.

But it wasn’t invented by the US or even by the South, and certainly wasn’t ended because suddenly over the course of a couple of centuries, everyone developed a sense of guilt.

Slavery existed worldwide…it wasn’t even outlawed anywhere until the 1800’s. Slavery is a deep subject and should be studied by anyone hoping to defend the South (or one’s self) from those who want to hang it around our collective necks.

It is in that spirit that I share the attached link and recommend watching the video so that you may be better informed on what you will invariably be attacked with.
