Congratulations to Brooke Ice on receiving the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award!

Brooke's Scouting journey began at age 14 as a member of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Explorer Post. Her first job was as a counselor at Woodruff Scout Camp, where she spent 11 summers in a variety of roles, including Health Lodge Director from 2018 to 2024. Today Brooke serves youth in three roles: Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 8088 in the Appalachian Trail District, Advisor for Venturing Crew 88, founded in 2024, and Lead Advisor for Explorer Post 469, which serves 30 youth across Cherokee and Cobb counties. In June, she also completed a Philmont trek with the Atlanta Area Scoutreach group. Outside of Scouting, Brooke has spent 10 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, following in the footsteps of her parents, both career firefighters. Congratulations, Brooke, and thank you for your dedication to Scouting!

Welcome back to the Atlanta Area Council, Matt!

We are pleased to announce that Matt Rendahl will be returning to the Atlanta Area Council as Director of Outdoor Programs! In this role, Matt will be responsible for delivering excellence in the Council’s summer and winter camp operations at Woodruff and Bert Adams Scout Camps and many other programs and events throughout the year. Matt will give direct leadership to our outdoor programs and facilities, and our talented Ranger team as well as approximately 300 seasonal camp staff members.

Matt began his career in Scouting in May 2008, working seasonally at Philmont, Northern Tier, and Sea Base. He then joined the full-time staff of Northern Tier in August 2010 as the Trading Post Specialist. In February 2013, Matt was promoted to Associate Director of Programs and managed all Canadian operations for Northern Tier. Matt was promoted to Team Lead – Program Administration for Philmont Training Center in October 2015. Matt joined the Atlanta Area Council in January 2018 as Director of Camping. In this role, Matt successfully led our summer camping operations at Woodruff and Bert Adams Scout camps as well as programs at Allatoona Aquatics Base. He played a significant role in building the culture of safety, service, and quality our camps are known for today. Matt was promoted in April 2021 to Director of Camping and Customer Service. He took on leadership of the Program Center and worked to continue reinforcing the culture of exceptional service for our guests. In January 2023, Matt was promoted to Manager of Outdoor Programs for the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Beckley, West Virginia. In this role, Matt has served thousands of Scouts and adult leaders from across the country with high-quality, transformational experiences.

That’s a wrap on an incredible Scout Skills Weekend!

Scouts had an amazing time putting in the work across the board—diving into trade skills inside our brand-new Trade Skills Building, mastering traditional Scout Skills, exploring STEM merit badges, and putting their aim to the test on the Ranges.

Huge thank you to all the volunteers and leaders who made this weekend such a success!
