Play is more than fun, it is how we make sense of the world.

Through games, imagination, movement, and make-believe, learners practice problem-solving, communication, creativity, and collaboration. They build, invent, negotiate rules, test ideas, and learn how to keep going when something doesn’t work the first time.

At Acton, play gives learners the freedom to follow their curiosity and turn ordinary moments into opportunities for discovery. Whether they are creating a new game, acting out a story, or working together toward a shared goal, they are developing skills that reach far beyond the moment.

Because when leaners play, they are not just passing the time, they are learning how to think, connect, create, and grow.

One moment it’s, “THERE’S A LITTLE SQUIRREL OUT THERE!” 🐿️👀
And the next: “Okay… let’s get back to our work.”

At Acton, we believe our youngest Learners are capable of more than we sometimes give them credit for. They are capable of making choices, taking responsibility, and learning to direct themselves.

That might look like pausing the work to watch a squirrel, asking a million questions about what it’s doing, and then deciding, “I’m ready to get back to it.” 🌱

Because learner-driven learning isn’t about keeping children perfectly focused every minute of the day. It’s about giving them the freedom to explore, the space to wonder, and the responsibility to choose when it’s time to return to the work.

Even our youngest Learners are practicing a skill that will serve them for life:

I am free to choose, and I am responsible for my choices. 💛

Sometimes the wrong turn is where the real learning begins. 🌱

At Acton, we don’t expect Learners to have all the answers or get everything right the first time. We give them space to try, stumble, rethink, and try again.

A setback becomes a chance to pause and ask:
What happened? What can I learn from it? What will I try next?

Because growth doesn’t come from avoiding the hard things. It comes from having the courage to face them, learn from them, and keep moving forward.

Try. Learn. Adjust. Keep going.

That’s the Hero’s Journey. 🦅

🎯 Calling all 6th–12th grade learners!

We’re excited to share an opportunity to get involved with the Union County 4-H Modified Trap Team!

This program is open to learners in 6th–12th grades and offers the chance to learn, practice, build discipline, and be part of a team. Some practices and competitions will even take place right here at River Bend Farm! 🦅

Whether your learner is brand new to the sport or already has experience, this is a great opportunity to try something new, develop a skill, and grow alongside other young people in our community.

Want to get involved in Union County 4-H's Modified Trap Team?
The fall season of our Modified Trap Team is designed for newer shooters to learn how we compete as Union County! ALL 6th-12th graders who are new to our program are welcome to attend the meeting- whether they attend UC Schools or if they are homeschooled!
Join us on October 6th from 6-7pm in the Civic Center to learn about shooting costs, the practice schedule. hunters safety requirements, fi***rm requirements and more! If you would like more information or will need accommodations, please contact the 4-H office at 706-439-6030.

This week our Spark tribe faced three monsters- the monsters of distraction, resistance and victimhood. They played games to find the antidotes to these monsters, how to identify them in themselves and what kind of heroism can conquer these beasts! We also enjoyed a new level of work in core skills, with our learners working so hard!

🗡️ Every hero has monsters to slay.

In the studio, the monsters aren’t always dragons. Sometimes they look like distraction, resistance, and victimhood.

Our learners are learning to face them with intentionality, a growth mindset, and accountability. To pause and ask: What is within my control? What can I learn? What choice will move me forward?

And they don’t have to slay them alone.

As a tribe, we build, create, problem-solve, encourage, and hold one another accountable. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow—not just individually, but together.

Because at Acton, we believe the hero’s journey isn’t about avoiding the monsters.

It’s about discovering that you have what it takes to face them. 🦁🌱
