Spiritual Formations | Training for Godliness

Following Jesus isn’t just about trying harder. It’s about training intentionally.

Paul tells Timothy that physical training has value—but training for godliness has value for this life AND the life to come.

We understand training physically. We get our steps in. We work out. We watch what we eat. We consistently do things today because we know they’ll produce results tomorrow.

Spiritual formation works the same way.

We intentionally practice rhythms and disciplines that put us in a position for God to shape us more and more into the image of Christ.

And we should expect growth.
We should expect maturity.
We should expect change.

Because the goal of following Jesus was never simply INFORMATION.

The goal is TRANSFORMATION.

Don’t just try. Train.

Day 24 | Spiritual Formations: Guidance

We were never meant to follow Jesus alone.

Throughout this series, we’ve looked at spiritual disciplines—intentional rhythms that help form us more and more into the image of Christ. We’ve explored inward disciplines, outward disciplines, and corporate disciplines.

And we finish with guidance.

Who are you investing in?
Who are you encouraging?
Who are you helping take their next step?

Spiritual formation isn’t only about what God is doing in us. It’s also about how He uses us in the lives of others.

That’s at the heart of why Not by Sight exists: to guide pastors to be better preachers and preachers to be better pastors—and to encourage pastors, next-generation leaders, and people everywhere.

Keep growing. Keep guiding. Keep investing in others.

For God’s glory and for our good.

Day 23 | Spiritual Formations: Celebration 🎉

“Joy is the serious business of Heaven.” — C.S. Lewis

Celebration isn’t just something we do when life is going well. It’s a spiritual discipline—a rhythm we intentionally build into our lives.

Look throughout Scripture and you’ll find God repeatedly calling His people to stop, remember, feast, and celebrate His goodness. Even in Leviticus, God established feasts that gave His people days to remember who He is and what He had done.

Maybe we need more of that.

Stop. Remember. Give thanks. Celebrate.

Don’t just wait for joy to happen. Practice the discipline of celebration and make room to experience the goodness and greatness of God.

What if changing the oil in a car could be an act of worship?

Day 22 of Spiritual Formations takes the idea of worship one step further.

Worship is not only worthship. It can also be workship.

Whatever work God has placed in front of you today can become an opportunity to glorify Him. You don’t need a stage, a band, or a worship song playing in the background.

Whether you’re preaching a sermon, changing oil, teaching a class, running a business, raising a family, or serving someone behind the scenes, your work can become worship when it’s done for the glory of God.

Whatever you do, do it for Him.

That’s workship.

Worship is more than a song.

Day 21 of Spiritual Formations takes us into the corporate discipline of worship.

Think of worship as “worthship.” It’s placing ultimate worth and value on God and God alone.

Singing and praising are certainly part of worship, but worship goes much deeper. It’s bowing down. It’s humbling ourselves. It’s recognizing who God is and giving Him His rightful place in everything we do.

That means worship doesn’t have to stop when the music stops.

We can worship throughout our entire day as we continually place our worth, attention, and devotion on God.

And worship is a discipline we practice best together.

We’re only scratching the surface.

Day 20 of Spiritual Formations is a reminder that these short videos aren’t meant to tell you everything there is to know about prayer, confession, solitude, service, or any other spiritual discipline.

They’re an introduction. A starting point.

Our hope is to get you thinking, studying, and practicing these rhythms for yourself as you continue being formed into the likeness of Jesus.

Want to go deeper? Check out resources like Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster and The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg.

And what’s today’s discipline?

Well…we ran out of time. You’ll have to come back tomorrow!

Confession moves us from isolation into community.

Day 19 of Spiritual Formations reminds us why confession is something we practice together.

When we miss the mark, our tendency is to isolate. We convince ourselves, “I’m the only one who struggles with this.”

But confession brings us back into community. It reminds us that we all need grace, we all need forgiveness, and we all need Jesus.

There’s freedom in being able to say, “I’ve struggled too. Aren’t you glad Jesus forgives?”

Confession keeps us on level ground at the cross together.
