Flag Retirement Continued…

06/18/2026

Today American Legion Post 281 held a solemn ceremony to respectfully dispose of unserviceable, worn, or damaged American flags. Under the U.S. Flag Code, burning is the traditional method of destruction. The flags are first inspected by the commander to confirm they are no longer fit for display.
Highlands JROTC came as color guard, Post 281 as rifle squad, local Girl Scout troops, County Legion Commander, and County Squadron Commander.

On Memorial Day, American Legion Post 281 hosted the township luncheon following the township Memorial Day Wreath Laying Service. The crochet and knitting club at the Gloucester Township Senior Center graciously handcrafted 250 poppies for the occasion.

Unit 281 decorated the hall to reflect In Flanders Fields, creating a moving tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The 250 poppies were displayed in honor of the upcoming United States Semiquincentennial.

The red poppy speaks where words fall short — a silent tribute to the sacrifices made for our freedom by the heroes who served and died for our country in all wars. ❤️‍🩹 The poppy is a reminder that their courage will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

After World War I, the American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day.

The Auxiliary promotes the poppy as a symbol of the sacrifices our military have made, a symbol to open people’s hearts and inspire them to donate to help support the future of veterans, servicemembers, and their families. 🇺🇸

Today, on National Poppy Day, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living. ❤️

Next Friday, May 22, is National Poppy Day! Although this flower is small, it is powerful! The poppy serves as a symbol of sacrifice to honor the fallen and support the living. 🇺🇸 Wear a red poppy on National Poppy Day to show appreciation and respect for all who have served and sacrificed in the U.S. Armed Forces.
