It was a perfect weekend for a High Adventure Campout at Blue Ridge Scout Reservation! We enjoyed time at the forge, throwing axes, black powder and modern r***e shooting and the zipline at Camp Ottari, BRSR. The zipline was a massive success; the scouts returned again and again. Troop 44 appreciates all the work that Venturing Crew 352 did to put on a really great event for our older scouts!

This weekend, Troop 44 braved the foggy West Virginia mountains to visit Green Bank Observatory! 30 scouts and leaders were absolutely delighted by our stay in their "bunk house," and enjoyed a truly unique experience in the National Radio Quiet Zone with the STEM programming put on by their staff. Digital photography wasn't allowed everywhere, but we do have some shots from around the Science Center and shielded locations. All scouts earned their Astronomy merit badge with this immersive and very hands-on program. The highlight for several of us was hiking down to the 40 foot telescope late at night where we got to operate it all by ourselves, orienting it to find evidence of neutral hydrogen along the galactic plane (that sounds super impressive, doesn't it??).
We will definitely visit again!

This past week Troop 44 had 5 intrepid scouts participate in the Blue Ridge Mountaineer program at Blue Ridge Scout Reservation! This is an amazing program that the scouts enjoyed immensely. Our week at BRM was filled with adventure, with crafting, cooking, learning, and above all - FUN. The scouts spent their days learning old timey games, shooting black powder r***es and sh****ns, building a camp knife, and of course most everyone's favorite was blacksmithing at the coal forges. At night the tavern opened and the sounds of laughter echoed through the holler even louder than the whippoorwills! Troop 44 was joined by two provisional scouts who fit right in and only enhanced our collective experience. Aside from two relatively brief daytime squalls we had dry and pleasant weather throughout. Many thanks to the staff of the Mountaineer program as they were all fantastic, helpful and accommodating.

It is such a unique experience; Troop 44 will definitely be returning next year!

Troop 44 had a fantastic time at Week 1 summer camp at Camp Powhatan, BRSR!
The weather mostly cooperated, and even when it didn't, scout spirits weren't dampened in the slightest! Between hundreds of trips to the Trading Post there may have been a few merit badges earned as well! Another great year at Camp Powhatan, BRSR. A special thank you to our three adult volunteers who spent the whole week with our scouts making sure that they had a camp to remember!

What an incredible week on the New River!

Our Scouts spent five days kayaking more than 40 miles through the New River Gorge, navigating Class II and III rapids, camping along the river, cooking meals, and learning new skills. Along the way they faced rain, sun, cold mornings, sandy campsites, and plenty of challenges, all with great attitudes and teamwork.

The trip concluded with a day on the Lower New River, where our crew tackled some of the most exciting whitewater in the East. The Scouts pushed themselves, encouraged one another, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

A special thank you to the guides, volunteers, and parents who helped make this adventure possible. Most importantly, congratulations to our Scouts for representing Troop 44 so well throughout the week.

Great adventure. Great friends. Great memories.

Troop 44 Recent Activities Report - APRIL 2026
This April the scouts have been a part of fun activities, including; learning woodworking skills to make bat houses, going to the Trout-O-Ree campout where the scouts could either fish or work on the Eagle required Camping Merit Badge, and a tour of the Historic Smithfield along with doing some service in their gardens, working towards the Liberty in Action challenge.

We had an amazing visit to Historic Smithfield yesterday! Along with 8 of our adult leaders, 29 scouts attended and began working on earning their Liberty in Action America's 250th Challenge. Smithfield is a former plantation in Blacksburg that dates back to America's founding period. We had an excellent tour of the facility, then learned about skills of the time such as blacksmithing, spinning and weaving. We learned about the families who lived there, and how they participated in America's independence. Finally, we performed a service project in the "kitchen garden" with lots of pruning, weeding, planting and dirt work. If your troop or pack is interested in working on Liberty in Action challenge, we highly recommend reaching out to them to schedule a visit!

Troop 44 Recent Activities Report - MARCH 2026
This March the scouts have participated in many fun activities. We set up the new patrols, learned map reading and compass skills, had a great campout with a big orienteering course around Camp Powhatan, we did fitness testing for the younger scouts along with some sporty games for everyone else, and finished with a meeting where we made and dyed blown eggs alongside an Easter egg hunt around the church.
