What an incredible week on the New River!

Our Scouts spent five days kayaking more than 40 miles through the New River Gorge, navigating Class II and III rapids, camping along the river, cooking meals, and learning new skills. Along the way they faced rain, sun, cold mornings, sandy campsites, and plenty of challenges, all with great attitudes and teamwork.

The trip concluded with a day on the Lower New River, where our crew tackled some of the most exciting whitewater in the East. The Scouts pushed themselves, encouraged one another, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

A special thank you to the guides, volunteers, and parents who helped make this adventure possible. Most importantly, congratulations to our Scouts for representing Troop 44 so well throughout the week.

Great adventure. Great friends. Great memories.

Troop 44 Recent Activities Report - APRIL 2026
This April the scouts have been a part of fun activities, including; learning woodworking skills to make bat houses, going to the Trout-O-Ree campout where the scouts could either fish or work on the Eagle required Camping Merit Badge, and a tour of the Historic Smithfield along with doing some service in their gardens, working towards the Liberty in Action challenge.

We had an amazing visit to Historic Smithfield yesterday! Along with 8 of our adult leaders, 29 scouts attended and began working on earning their Liberty in Action America's 250th Challenge. Smithfield is a former plantation in Blacksburg that dates back to America's founding period. We had an excellent tour of the facility, then learned about skills of the time such as blacksmithing, spinning and weaving. We learned about the families who lived there, and how they participated in America's independence. Finally, we performed a service project in the "kitchen garden" with lots of pruning, weeding, planting and dirt work. If your troop or pack is interested in working on Liberty in Action challenge, we highly recommend reaching out to them to schedule a visit!

Troop 44 Recent Activities Report - MARCH 2026
This March the scouts have participated in many fun activities. We set up the new patrols, learned map reading and compass skills, had a great campout with a big orienteering course around Camp Powhatan, we did fitness testing for the younger scouts along with some sporty games for everyone else, and finished with a meeting where we made and dyed blown eggs alongside an Easter egg hunt around the church.

Troop 44 had a wonderful time camping over the weekend at Camp Powhatan! We got really lucky with the weather, which was cool and dry. Mr. Jim and Mr. Dwayne had set up a large orienteering course for our main event on Saturday. We learned land navigation skills with map, compass, sun and stars. We laughed, played cards, hiked, joked, made odd mountain pie desserts over the fire, and even fished! Truly a fun-filled weekend.
Three takeaways :
1) We had a great turnout - there were 35 participants eager to do some wayfinding!
2) Troop 44 eats WELL on our campouts. I mean, come on... Mr. Jim slow cooked pulled pork for 9 hours in dutch ovens for our Saturday dinner, and then cakes for dessert - it was amazing!
3) The Blue Ridge Scout Reservation is an amazing resource that we are extremely fortunate to have in our backyard. We were glad to give back nearly 40 scout-hours of service!

Troop 44 came out strong at the Klondike Derby this weekend! The Troop fielded two sled groups which crushed all of the challenges in their way. Both the Blue Goldfish and Sassy Sasquatches did a fantastic job of working as a team, showing scout spirit, and accomplishing all 20 objectives. The Sassy Sasquatches even won the sled race!

TROOP 44 RECENT ACTIVITIES REPORT

This February the scouts missed a couple meetings due to bad weather, but we still did many fun activities; we had a speaker on the dangers of drugs and alcohol and reviewed the Leave No Trace principles. We also continued preparing for the upcoming Klondike Derby with fun challenges such as moving items with ropes, making a square blindfolded, and seeing how many scouts could stand on a tiny stool. Yesterday we met the newly crossed over scouts from the Cub Scouts, built fires and learned about fire safety.

We had a fantastic time at Camp Powhatan's Winter Camp this past weekend! The four intrepid scouts who braved the cold each earned 2-3 merit badges. One of them had a birthday while at camp so we made her a cake in a dutch oven. While it wouldn't win any awards for presentation it sure was delicious!. Speaking of not winning awards for presentation, a few tarps and a small propane heater in the picnic shelter made for a very cozy hangout spot for our group when we weren't otherwise occupied in classes, on adventures, or having a great time at the cracker barrel!

Todays meeting was low-key but full of laughs — and pumpkins! The scouts got creative with some great (and sometimes spooky) designs. Always fun to see what everyone comes up with when you hand them a carving knife and a pumpkin.

We had a great weekend with our older scouts at Camp Ottari! 🔥⚒️

The scouts spent time at the forge and woodworking areas — some impressive projects came out of it! We also branched out with the menu this time… Philly cheesesteaks, pizza quesadillas, and donuts. (Not all together — though we’re not ruling it out for next time.) 😅

Always great to see the scouts trying new things and having fun outdoors!
