Blacksburg-Bocay Sister City

Blacksburg-Bocay Sister City Blacksburg Town Council declared San José de Bocay in Nicaragua’s Jinotega department as Blacksburg’s sister city in 1989.

Various local church, student, and civic organizations campaigned for the sister city designation after Blacksburg residents had visited the area on human rights delegations during the Contra War. Since 1989, Blacksburg residents have donated funds to build Bocay schools and send Bocay teachers to college, coordinated by the Blacksburg-San José de Bocay Sister City Committee. The Committee organiz

es an annual January trip to Bocay in which Blacksburg area residents and Virginia Tech students have participated, engaging in service projects such as building fuel-efficient wood stoves to reduce deforestation.
