HokiePRIDE of Virginia Tech

HokiePRIDE of Virginia Tech The premier LGBTQ+ organization on Virginia Tech's campus. This group continued to exist throughout the 1970s, but was eventually dissolved.

HokiePRIDE was originally founded as the Gay Student Alliance in 1971, after 4 years of lobbying administration. In 1983, students revived the Gay Student Alliance, renaming the org Lambda Horizons. The name then changed to the LGBTA of Virginia Tech, and later to HokiePRIDE in 2014.

From United Feminist Movement at VT: Sexual violence on our campus is not going away and will not be ignored. For years, .tech has failed to broadly address this ongoing problem. Join us next Tuesday on the Burruss steps to demand a comprehensive university-wide action plan committing to accountability and transparency from Virginia Tech Administration.

, right now, are calling for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Here’s what you need to know: George Floyd’s life would not have been saved by the provisions of this bill—because this bill calls for reform. More cameras, more training, more money spent on policing. Our police departments have already been doing this.

We don’t need the Justice in Policing Act. We need the BREATHE Act. A radically different reimagining of community safety.

Community safety—a value of Black life— is what keeps Black folks safe. Not more police.

As representatives and members of the diverse body of gender and sexual minorities on this campus, we at HokiePRIDE wholeheartedly condemn the vile and vitriolic hate speech that has surfaced on social media in the last week. The homophobic, transphobic, ableist, racist, and sexist comments directed at communities on this campus, including our own, are horrendous and upsetting.

We as a community reaffirm that this behavior is shameful, and does not embody what it means to be a Hokie. It flouts the core pillars of the university’s principles and our dedication to serving and uplifting others. The outpouring of support we have received from students, faculty, and organizations on this campus is a testament to the fact that this sort of rhetoric is the antithesis of what Virginia Tech stands for.

Hateful behavior and language harms everyone, not just the communities it targets. It is vital that we continue to make our spaces accommodating and demonstrate to the world that Virginia Tech is an inclusive and affirming environment for students of all identities and backgrounds.

In keeping with this vital mission, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center provides a free training program called VirTual Safe Zone that serves to educate any student, organization, department, or faculty member on how to maintain and encourage supportive and inclusive spaces for all students. We strongly recommend signing up for this program if you wish to show support for LGBTQ+ members of your own communities.

"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself."

-Harvey Fierstein

VirTual Safe Zone is an online 5-week intensive course with weekly readings, writings, and a live discussion lab. The curriculum is meant to assist with the development of content knowledge.
