Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry

Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry was formed by area faith-based communities. We rely solely on food and monetary donations. There are no paid staff members.

We are an all-volunteer organization staffed by faith-based communities, organizations, and community members. The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry (BIFP) was founded on October 15, 1987 to serve families of Blacksburg and McCoy. The BIFP is run entirely by volunteers. All client needs are met through cash and food donations. At its inception, the BIFP was open only one day a week and served 19 f

amilies in its first month. Blacksburg Baptist Church on Main Street hosted BIFP for its first 25 years. Everyone that visited the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry during its first 20 years was certain to have met its directors, Alice Wills or Frances Sterrett.

25 years later, the BIFP now enjoys a newly constructed 10,000 square foot facility funded through donations from Dr. T. Marshall Hahn and other members of Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The BIFP is now open four days a week and serves approximately 300 families per month. The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry is a program of New River Community Action, Inc. (NRCA). NRCA is a non-profit agency and qualified under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. NRCA is subject to an annual audit by independent certified public accountants. For the most recent report of NRCA visit http://www.swva.net/nrca/documents-reports.html

The BIFP is operated through the combined efforts of many people. Our current director is Andrea Muscatello. Volunteers from area churches and the community serve on a rotating schedule throughout the month.

Every summer, children in our community lose access to the school breakfasts and lunches they depend on during the academic year. For families already struggling to make ends meet, the summer months create even greater food insecurity and difficult choices about how to provide healthy meals for their children.

To help meet this need, the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry’s Summer Food Program provides children in Blacksburg and McCoy with bags of food throughout June, July, and August to help replace the meals they no longer receive at school.
This year, through the GiveLocalNRV campaign, we are raising funds to do more than provide food—we want to provide healthier food. Your support will help us add fresh fruits and vegetables to these summer food bags, giving children access to nutritious foods that many families cannot regularly afford.

Fresh produce is often one of the first items families must forgo when budgets are tight. The cost of fruits and vegetables, transportation barriers, and time constraints make it difficult for many parents to provide the healthy meals they want for their children.

Your gift can help change that.
Surpassing our $3,000 goal for the summer food program will allow us to provide additional fruit for all our customers, specifically oranges and pears.
With your support, children in our community will not only have food during the summer months but will also have access to fresh fruits and vegetables that support their health, growth, and well-being.

We would like to say a special THANK YOU to Clinton Transfer and Storage. They have helped the Pantry with two large projects. First, they stored over 15,000 pounds of food that we received from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints until we could organize its distribution to our Pantry and several others. Second, when Agape received 30 - 100 pounds of rice from a tractor trailer accident. Clinton storage the rice until we could pick it up. We will be repacking the rice into 1 pound bags for distribution.

THANK YOU to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints who generously shared with us a large donation of food. We received so much that we were able to share with Agape, the Giles mission, and Eagles Nest Ministry in Floyd. We received spaghetti noodles and sauce, macaroni noodles, salsa, peanut butter, flour, nonfat dry milk, black beans, and macaroni and cheese. We are so grateful.

The Food Pantry will be closed Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.
