Massive thanks to all the volunteers who came to help out today! This work will help keep the trail coridors near the pond clear, and help move water off the trail to minimize erosion.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY‼️

June 6th is National Trails Day! PCTC is partnering with Southern Appalachain Wilderness Stewards to host a volunteer workday to improve trails near Pandapas Pond.

If you'd like to join us for the workday, please be at the lower parking area by the pond by 9am (4033 Pandapas Pond Rd, Blacksburg, VA 24060).

Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. If you have a pair of work gloves you like, bring those too (we will also have some on site for volunteers). Bring water/snacks and be prepared for about 3 hours of hiking/working. We will provide any additional tools and supplies.

Yes, this is the same day as Roots Fest! We've scheduled it early both to beat the heat and to get back in time to prep for the concert. We'd love to see you at both events!

If you've been looking for a way to be involved with trail maintenance in our area, this is a great place to start!

Roots Fest Nonprofit Spotlight: Poverty Creek Trails Coalition!

If you’ve spent time hiking 🥾, biking 🚴, horseback riding 🐎, running 🏃, or simply enjoying the trails around Blacksburg, you’ve likely benefited from the work of Poverty Creek Trails Coalition.

We’re proud to spotlight PCTC as one of the nonprofit beneficiaries of this year’s Roots Fest . 🎶

Poverty Creek Trails Coalition’s mission is to create, maintain, and improve multi-use trails in the New River Valley.

What began as a grassroots effort to care for the Pandapas Pond/Poverty Creek trail system has grown into the region’s primary volunteer-driven trail stewardship organization, helping maintain more than 45 miles of trails while advocating for sustainable outdoor recreation and trail access throughout the NRV. 🌿

Thank you, PCTC, for the time, care, and hard work you put into the trails our community enjoys! 🙏

And another round of kudos to our venue/event partner, Rising Silo Brewery, and sponsors NRV Title, Freedom First Credit Union, River Mountain Properties, Shelter Alternatives, Inc. & Northpoint Insurance Advisors. We know this would not be possible without your support!

(another friendly reminder to PLEASE carpool, bike or use public transportation - parking is limited)

Word's out, the burg has great trails! So good, in fact, that apparently the big dawgs are using it as a tire testing ground!

glad you stopped by, hope you enjoyed! Since you're obviously developing the perfect tires for our dirt, maybe you can send a few out as prizes for our annual fundraiser...😆

Also, I'm no engineer, but that bike sure looks like it might be bigger than a 29er...is it the first 32" wheel rig to roll through town? Can any internet sleuths confirm or deny?

Fresh improvements on Chimney Trail! 🛠️🌲

The Poverty Creek Trails Coalition just completed a short B-line around one of the technical rock features on Chimney. The new reroute keeps the flow and character of the trail intact while creating a smoother, more horse-friendly option through the section.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to move rock, shape tread, and keep our trails accessible and enjoyable for all users. See you out there! 🐎🥾🚵

Behind every clear, rideable mile of trail is a dedicated crew making it happen. 🌲🪚

The Poverty Creek Trails Coalition’s sawyer team works year-round to remove fallen trees, clear debris, and keep the trails safe and accessible for everyone. These skilled volunteers are trained to handle everything from small blowdowns to major storm damage—often hiking miles in with heavy equipment just to keep the trail flowing.

Their work might go unnoticed on a smooth run, hike, or ride, but it makes all the difference. Next time you’re out there, remember: every clear path is thanks to people who care deeply about these trails.

Want to support the effort or get involved? Reach out to the coalition and be part of keeping Poverty Creek rolling strong. 💚
