This weekend: The VTCC Cyber Team placed 22/141 teams in the Department of Energy’s CyberForce CTF. Participants included other top name universities, industry professionals and security researchers in a hybrid environment in St. Charles, Illinois.

The competition included defending a set of Industrial Control Systems in a virtualized environment from a live red team while answering anomalies/CTF questions. We look forward to participating again next year.

Next weekend the Corps Cyber Team will be traveling to Chicago to compete in the Department of Cyberforce competition. This is a great CTF where we get to defend actual industrial control systems, create security reports, and present our findings to a C-Suite panel.

It is Cyber Tech Tip Tuesday, everyone! Want to know information about a specific network? Have you ever tried the nmap tool, because you need to!

nmap, which stands for Network Mapper, will scan an IP address for running services on open ports, OS system versions, service versions, and much more. Why would you want this information? Well, especially for reconnaissance, simply knowing what operating system and service versions can determine if a network has a vulnerability to be exploited. If your service version isn’t up to date, there could be a previous hole that you haven’t updated on your network yet! Use this for Ethical Hacking or Red Teaming your own or someone else's network (with their permission!) Also, don’t just go around scanning any and every network, it is a legal grey area to do so! Only do it with authorized access or on your networks.

We are back with Cyber-Tech tips Tuesday! Topic Today - NDAs and AI!

A Google Engineer recently violated his NDA to expose a possibly sentient AI to the public developed by Google. Whether he was correct or not - he still should not have violated his NDA. People are always the easiest Information Security vulnerability - like this Engineer who willingly unveiled information that could negatively impact Google. An NDA is the last promise between an employee and a company to not unveil work and secrets about a company.

If something unethical is happening, report it to your team, management, HR or other higher sources internally. Solve from within until it's no longer possible!

Google has stated that the Lamda AI has simply learned how to speak like humans and understand conversation. Who do YOU think is right?
