STATEMENT OF ENDORSEMENT OF THE "FOR A FIGHTING WORKERS MOVEMENT"

Recently, workers from across industries and unions have come together to hold an alternative event to the annual Labor Notes conference. Labor Notes has been a presence within the labor movement for decades with the goal of democratizing and reforming unions to better represent the interests of rank and file union members, at least for a time.

As highlighted in the statement released by “For A Fighting Workers Movement,” Labor Notes has become enmeshed within the labor bureaucracy, representing their interests over the rank and file, while stifling the efforts of workers pushing for a more militant orientation.

These workers have started their own caucuses to address the void left by Labor Notes as they began hitching their wagon to business union bureaucrats while also cozying up to the two capitalist parties.

As an IWW local we welcome the call to build a workers’ united front on the basis of a class struggle orientation. We firmly agree with the six points of unity in the founding statement of For A Fighting Workers Movement and seek to play our part in building this effort across industries and unions to strengthen the working class and realize our objective of abolishing the wage system.

We also encourage other IWW locals and the national body to endorse this effort as many wobblies are dual card members of both the IWW and other unions.

Coordinating with IWW dual card members and other workers within different union affiliations can only help the task of organizing the unorganized, pushing the union movement left, and build working class power across the US.

Solidarity Forever.

Thanks to all fellow workers who came to the cookout and celebrated May Day with us. This was by far our biggest and best May Day celebration yet!

While most of our members held down the fort and celebrated International Workers Day in Christiansburg, we also sent members to a union organizer training hosted by fellow workers in Chesapeake, Virginia! We're building worker power one step at a time!

Our May Day cookout will start with a bang from first performer Joshua Vana!

Joshua Vana is a songwriter, song collector, multi-instrumentalist and justice issues organizer-advocate based in the New River Valley. Over the last fifteen years, he's been a worker and part owner of a worker-owned collective in the Shenandoah Valley, a touring and recording musician with the Nashville-based Nora Jane Struthers, and more recently an environmental and arts organizer based in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia.

For the last nine years he has been involved in various capacities in the fight against new fossil fuel infrastructure in Central Appalachia and the Piedmont, primarily fracked gas pipelines including the Mountain Valley Pipeline and proposed Southgate extension. He currently co-leads the Charlottesville-Buckingham based Buckbilly Deluxe, a hardcore country music outfit of the Wild & Blue Ridge, and is director of ARTivism Virginia, working with artists and activists in the fight for environmental justice in the region.
