“As someone from Letcher County, I know that people are desperate for job opportunities, and I felt like it was very important as we drafted our plans to be sensitive to the fact that we can’t take something away without putting something in this place,” said the co-executive director of Appalachian Rekindling Project...There will need to be lots of jobs in the work, in care of the bison. There are so many different ways that people can have good paying jobs that don’t necessarily mean that they have to be inside of a prison all day.”

This is a good deal for Letcher County. This land can be reclaimed and used to create a welcome space and new kinds of jobs.

Rep. Hal Rogers has wanted another prison in eastern Kentucky for years. Local and national activists say the new land owners have better plans for Letcher County.

BOP Director Colette Peters recently acknowledged to a Congressional committee "Our priorities are clear: recruitment, retention, employee wellness and maintenance and repair.” Director Peters did not mention new prisons, or Letcher County.

OpEd: Existing BOP prisons are critically understaffed, unrepaired, and over-filled. The Letcher project won’t help.

Plans for a new federal prison are floating around Letcher County, Kentucky, a rural county of about 25,000 people located in the Appalachian coalfields.

Evidence suggests a prison in Letcher County will do more harm than help our community. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is taking comments on the Final Draft Environmental Impact Statement for FCI Letcher through August 12, 2024.
