As the celebrations for the 4th of July grow closer Blackburn First Responders and Firefighters want to send out a few friendly reminders to keep all our friends and family in the community safe for the upcoming holiday weekend:
Fireworks Safety:
* Choose an open space: Always set off fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from houses, dry leaves, grass, and other flammable materials.
* Keep a safe distance: Maintain a safe distance from fireworks as they are being used. Stand at least 35 feet away from ground fireworks and 150 feet away from aerial fireworks.
* Have water handy: Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby to extinguish fireworks that don't ignite or in case of fire.
* Soak and discard: Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding them.
* Supervise children: Never allow children to handle fireworks unsupervised.
* Protective eyewear: Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
* One at a time: Light only one firework at a time and move away to a safe distance.
* No containers: Never ignite fireworks in a container, especially a glass or metal one.
* Store safely: Store fireworks in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets.
* Watch the weather: Watch for burn bans and the direction of the wind before setting anything off.
Grilling Safety:
* Keep grills away from hazards: Position grills at least 10 feet away from buildings, decks, and overhanging branches.
* Never leave unattended: Never leave a grill unattended while cooking.
* Have safety equipment: Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand nearby when grilling.
* Proper disposal: Ensure charcoal is cooled, watered down, and disposed of properly after use.
* Gas grill safety: Keep your face away from the grill when lighting it. Turn off the gas canister after use.
* Keep children and pets away: Make sure children and pets are kept at a safe distance from the grill.
Other Fire Prevention Tips:
* Clear potential hazards: Clear dry leaves, pine needles, and other flammable materials from around your property.
* Water down your roof and deck: If you have a dry roof or deck, consider watering them down before setting off fireworks.
* Install smoke alarms: Ensure your smoke alarms are working and test them regularly.
* Have an escape plan: Have a fire escape plan in place and practice it with your family
