Hand in Hand Supports Owen District Public Schools

Hand in Hand of the Swannanoa Valley made over $4900.00 at their BBQ luncheon fundraiser held on Friday, September 29 (2023) at Grove Stone Baptist Church and all proceeds will be given to the six Owen District Public Schools. Hand in Hand is a 501c organization that was founded by Lois Nix in 2006 as a volunteer run non-profit supported by local

businesses, churches, organizations, and individuals. 100% of all money given to Hand in Hand is given to the schools. Our mission is to support students’ educational needs and enable them to fully participate in school. Since Hand in Hand was founded, it has distributed more than $285,000 to the Swannanoa Valley District Public Schools. Hand in Hand helps children fully participate in school by purchasing eyeglasses, needed coats and clothing, school field trips, graduation cap and gowns, items needed for the classroom and much more. In previous years, the organization has helped pay off school lunch balances owed by students who could not afford to buy lunch. On September 25, 2023, Hand in Hand gave checks totaling $12,870.00 to the six Owen District Public Schools. This was made possible through community donations and the work of our volunteers. We hold a Smoked Turkey and Homemade Cakes fundraiser in November for Thanksgiving. In February, we offer a Chicken and Dumpling meal for delivery, carry out or to dine in. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings held every other month on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:00 pm at Grove Stone Baptist Church.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Each effort large and small produced another generous sum for our mission - helping the Owen District School students.

$3417 from the sale of smoked turkeys, cakes, pumpkin pies, and stuffing was the result.

A big thank you to Ron FInk who smoked 64 turkeys for us, to Grove Stone Baptist Church for the use of their kitchen and fellowship hall, to all those who volunteered and those who made purchases.

Black Mountain is holding its Art By the Tracks event this Saturday, Oct. 25; 10-5PM.

One of Hand in Hand's generous donors, Catherine Turner, is donating ALL proceeds of her handcrafted quilts, placemats, dish towels, coasters, etc., plus some ornaments, arrangements and much more to Hand in Hand.

The booth will be in front of Sassafrass Bookstore on Sutton Ave. across from the Caboose.

Her items are beautiful and she has worked on these items all year. Pick up an early Christmas gift, or something nice for yourself! Catherine is especially thankful for the opportunity to assist our Owen District schools as we continue to recover from Helene.

You help when you share. 😍
