We had fun at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic in late April by beautiful Lake Tomahawk!

The picnic was a great opportunity for volunteers and staff to connect, especially with those we may not see much in our usual roles. We also recognized a few outstanding volunteers and celebrated the community impact SVCM created in 2025, with God’s help.

Thank you to our NeighborCare Medical Assistant & Interpreter Mariana Rodriguez for leading the planning of this year’s volunteer picnic. Thanks also to Ole's Guacamoles Black Mountain NC for catering, to La Unica for the piñata and Pasteles Teresita of Marion for the cake.

Last but not least, thanks to our amazing volunteers who play such vital roles at SVCM every day! 🫶

THIS WEEK AT SVCM (June 15-19) 🗓

NeighborCare's Wednesday clinic will run from 10:30AM to 12:30PM this week. We still have appointments available 11:30AM - 12:30PM. NeighborCare offers primary and urgent care for patients of all ages. Spanish interpretation is available. To make an appointment, please give us a call at (828) 669-9404 ext. 232. 📲 (If you’re experiencing a true medical emergency, please always call 9-1-1.)

All SVCM programs will be closed this Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We’ll reopen for regular hours on Monday, June 22.

Kevin and Charlie recently talked with the Black Mountain News about Hammer & Heart’s new workshop, as well as SVCM’s big 50th celebration and ribbon cutting on July 24.

“This workshop for Hammer & Heart is about extending that ministry of keeping people housed in our community,” said SVCM Executive Director Kevin Bates.

Hammer & Heart Program Director Charlie Wilson shared how the workshop is already making home repairs more efficient. “Not even officially open but already having an impact,” Wilson said.

Our staff and volunteers enjoyed pizza night at Good Company Pizza this Wednesday to support the restaurant’s fundraiser for NeighborCare! 🍕 Good Company Pizza generously donated 10% of all their proceeds on Wednesday to SVCM NeighborCare. The fundraiser brought in $302, enough to pay for 103 A1C tests! The A1C test is how diabetes is diagnosed.🩸🧪

Thanks to everyone who dined out for a cause at Good Company this Wednesday! And we’re so grateful to Good Company for their support of NeighborCare! We’re blessed to call you neighbors! 🫶

Since its formation in 2025, SVCM's NeighborCare Medical Clinic has conducted more than 310 clinic visits and 467 medical screenings in our community, all at no cost to the patient. On June 5, 1975, SVCM - first named ABCCM-East - had its very first board meeting! Board members from eight Swannanoa Valley churches came together to lay the groundwork for an ecumenical Christian ministry that still serves our valley today.

This June 5, we’re preparing to come together once again! This time, it’s to celebrate and give thanks for a great blessing - 50 years of neighbors serving neighbors in the name of Christ. Please mark your calendars for July 24 - it’s going to be fun for the whole family. We hope to see you there!

🐦 JUNE DONATION NEEDS 🐦

We want to give a special shout-out to Trinity Episcopal Church, Asheville, NC for their generous donation to our food pantry this May! SVCM was a recipient of a large food donation through their Red Bag Initiative. We also want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 9! As a MANNA FoodBank Partner, SVCM’s food pantry receives significant donations of nonperishable food from Stamp Out Hunger, the largest one-day food drive in the nation! All of these donations will go directly to Swannanoa Valley neighbors in need.

If you are interested in donating goods to SVCM, here are the things we need most this June:

FOOD PANTRY:
🔸Ground coffee
🔸Individually packaged snacks
🔸16oz. Ball canning jars with lids (or similar)
🔸Disposable incontinence underpads

CLOTHING CLOSET:
🔹Men's women's, and children's socks
🔹Men’s underwear - size small
🔹Adult backpacks
🔹Bath and hand towels

Please drop off donations at our back porch Monday - Friday 9AM - 2:30PM. We can provide a donation receipt if you’d like one!

Friends and neighbors, we have such exciting news to share with you today! 🎉

In May, SVCM purchased a new building along NC-9 in Black Mountain! This massive space will serve as SVCM Hammer & Heart's new workshop, allowing us to efficiently build prefab structures for Swannanoa Valley neighbors in need.🔨💚 From this new home base, Hammer & Heart will continue to collaborate with Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) and other community partners, working together to build dignified housing for our neighbors. The space will also provide medical storage for SVCM NeighborCare and parking for its future Mobile Medical Unit. 🩺 🚑

We give thanks to God for these amazing blessings we can share with our Swannanoa Valley community! 🌄 And we are grateful to our generous supporters who made it possible to purchase this new building! 🙏

But wait, there’s more! Did you know that SVCM is now in its 50th year of serving the Swannanoa Valley? On July 24, we’ll be celebrating SVCM’s past, present, and future with a big party at Hammer & Heart’s new space - and you’re invited! 🎊 We hope you’ll join us, so please mark your calendars! 🗓
