Black Earth Institute

Black Earth Institute Black Earth Institute is dedicated to re-forging the links between art and spirit, earth and society.

Our Vision:
Black Earth Institute was founded in 2004 as a progressive think-tank dedicated to creating a more ethical world with artist-fellows and scholar-advisors. BEI seeks to help create a more just and deeply interconnected world and promote the health of the planet. To do so artists are appointed as Fellows for a term and Scholars join as advisors. BEI then encourages and supports its pres

ent and past Fellows and Scholars to address social justice, environmental issues and the spiritual dimensions of the human condition in their art and work. Our Mission:
Black Earth Institute is a community of artist-fellows and scholar-advisers creating a more ethical world. Our Core Values:

Working Toward A Society Based on Justice, Spirit and Earth Centeredness
Art promotes an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings and this earth we share. We believe our art speaks to all through the diverse voices of our artist fellows who are committed to our core values. Fundamental to BEI is the belief that the arts are a powerful way to create respect for human worth, dignity, and equality while promoting the health of the earth. BEI Fellows and Scholars use their individual and collective voices to promote an understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings and this earth we all share. Partnership and Collective Action
Fellows and scholars of BEI all reflect its values and goals in their individual work. We meet annually to discuss our work in light of our mission and with the leadership of the scholars deepen our view of critical cultural developments and set goals for the coming year. We maintain a network to support and promote each other’s work. Fellows guest edit an issue of About Place Journal, our online literary journal, choosing a theme promoting the Institute’s goals in art. Thousands of readers see artists’ pages in each issue and hundreds of artists have contributed to the journal. Panels and readings at conferences, universities, and public gatherings are done in the name of BEI. These activities then draw other artists to participate in or support the work of BEI. We partner with other artists and organization of like vision to join our voices in our mission.

We are excited to share new work and recent recognition from BEI Fellow Alexis Lathem

Her newest essay, “Witness at Witless Bay,” has been published in The Hopper. Inspired by her visit to the seabird colonies off the coast of Newfoundland, the essay reflects on wildlife, observation, and our relationship with the natural world.

Congratulations, Alexis, on these wonderful accomplishments. We encourage our community to explore and support her work.

I had long dreamed about seeing them. In their multitudes, in the grand setting of fog-draped sea cliffs. Because they throng in such immensities. Because they belong to the fog and the salt spray. Because they belong to the sea and yet they are winged, and yet they also belong to the sky.

NEW NOVEL by Elizabeth Cunningham

We are excited to announce Elizabeth Cunningham’s latest fairytale novel “Over the Edge of the World”. The story reflects on mortality and immortality, courage and folly, justice and injustice, and the possibility of ecological redemption.

Set in another world and a timeless time, the novel is told through Rose, an old woman who begins sharing a story the children never tire of hearing. As she slowly reveals what she has never told before, a hidden world of power, secrecy, and quiet acts of bravery comes into view.

Learn more:

Featuring four elemental grannies, this magical story speaks to our own world and time as only a fairytale can—of human bravery and folly, justice and injustice, ecological disaster and redemption. […]
