Kappa Delta at the University of North Dakota hosted its first annual Run for PCAA, a fun and meaningful 5K dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). Participants of all ages and abilities came together for a morning of movement, community, and a great cause. Even better, 80% of event proceeds will support Families Flourish ND!

☀️ The run took place on Saturday (Oct 10) and participants were treated to a beautiful, sunny fall morning.

Lindsey attended and participated in the walk on behalf of the Families Flourish ND team. She had the opportunity to meet the incredible women of Kappa Delta UND while enjoying the event alongside friends & community members committed to supporting children and families.

We were thrilled to learn that Kappa Delta not only met their fundraising goal, but surpassed it, raising more than $1,000 to support child abuse prevention efforts. What an incredible accomplishment for their first annual event!

This inspiring group of passionate, dedicated young women is making a real difference and helping create positive change for children and families.

Thank you, Kappa Delta, for your support of prevention and your commitment to helping North Dakota families flourish!

As we get into the swing of the new school year, many families may find themselves making decisions about sleepovers.

In a recent poll, members of the ND CSA Prevention Network were asked about their stance on overnight sleepovers. Nearly 76% said they allow them, but are highly selective when making those decisions.

It's hard to imagine a world where our children never spend a night away from us because ... life happens! There may be emergencies, work commitments, family obligations, or other situations where we need to entrust our children to someone else's care, whether that's a grandparent, relative, family friend, or another trusted adult.

This conversation isn't really about whether sleepovers are good or bad, or who is right in the ongoing debate. It's about recognizing that every family is making decisions within different circumstances, with different children, experiences, & comfort levels.

At Families Flourish ND we believe this is a choice only you can make for your child. Give yourself permission to make the decision that's right for your family!

To help, we've created a few tools and resources to support thoughtful, informed conversations and decisions about overnight stays.

🧩Prevention Perspective: The Little Things Add Up

We've been working on a Halloween puzzle as a family this week. Some nights it's just a couple of us. Other nights everyone joins in.

As we've sat around the table talking, laughing, and searching for that one missing piece, I've found myself thinking about a phrase we often use in prevention work: connection is protection.

It's easy to think prevention requires something big, but often it's found in these everyday moments of togetherness. Shared activities create opportunities for conversation, belonging, and connection. And those relationships are one of the strongest protective factors we can offer our children.

It's not really about the puzzle. It's about making space for connection. Because the little moments often become the foundation for the relationships that help children feel safe, supported, and loved.

Not into puzzles? No big deal. Here are a few other simple ways to build connection:

• Take a walk together
• Play a family game
• Read a book side-by-side
• Bake or cook something together
• Use car rides to chat about the day
• Take the dog for a walk together
• Create something with art supplies or LEGO
• Toss a ball around in the yard
• Rake leaves together (maybe jump in afterwards)
• Enjoy a device-free snack, meal, or hot chocolate together

💙One caring adult can help change the trajectory of a child's story.💚

Every child deserves to have at least one caring adult they can turn to during difficult times. Through Handle with Care (HWC), law enforcement and schools across North Dakota work together to ensure students impacted by trauma receive compassion, support, and understanding when they need it most.

Research continues to show that positive, supportive relationships with caring adults can be a powerful protective factor for youth mental health. A simple act of kindness, encouragement, or connection can help a child feel seen, valued, and supported during some of their hardest days.

During Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of fostering connection, trust, and support for children and youth. To all of our Handle with Care partners: Thank you for being part of the safety net surrounding North Dakota's children and youth. Your presence, care, and commitment make a difference, even when you may never fully see the impact!
