Principle 7: North Dakota Does Not Mass Mail Ballots

Voting in ND is secure because a voter must submit a ballot application to vote absentee. The county auditor reviews it and verifies the voter's ID before mailing a ballot.

North Dakota lost a treasure this week.

Our dear friend and North Star, David Schwalbe, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, and to say we are at a loss is an understatement.

When a small but stalwart group of us decided to take on the challenge of the North Dakota Kennedy Center, David stepped up. From the beginning, he was integral to everything we did. He gave us his labor, his time, his ideas—and more than a little blood, sweat, and tears—as we worked to bring this old building back to life.

David was the first one through the door for planning meetings and events. He always came with ideas, enthusiasm, and a willingness to roll up his sleeves and do whatever needed to be done. He was an optimist in that particular way only a farmer and horseman can truly understand: you do the work, weather the setbacks, and trust that tomorrow is worth preparing for.

He was absolutely reliable. He was trustworthy. And when David believed in something, he gave it his time, his energy, his resources, and his whole heart.

But far more important than anything he did for the Kennedy Center, David was our dear friend. We loved him, and we are absolutely devastated by his loss. It is difficult to imagine this place—or our lives—without him walking through the door.

So sometime this week, in David’s honor, do something good. Help a neighbor. Show up for your community. Lend a hand to someone who needs one. Give your time to something you believe in.

It’s what David would have done.

Thank you, David, for everything you gave us. We will miss you more than words can say.

To his beautiful wife, Ellen, and to the family we heard so much about and knew he loved so dearly, our hearts are with you.

David, you will forever be part of this place, and forever in our hearts.

North Dakota needs over 3,000 poll workers to conduct a statewide election. Poll workers need to be at least 16 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of North Dakota. They must be able to attend a training session and will be paid for their efforts.

Poll workers help set up and prepare polling locations, check in voters, issue ballots, and assist in the closing of polls at the end of election day. No special experience is needed, and poll workers will learn everything they need to know during a paid training session provided by their county auditor.

For more information on becoming a poll worker, you can contact your local county auditor or visit the Be a Poll Worker page on the North Dakota Secretary of State website (https://www.sos.nd.gov/elections/voter/be-poll-worker).

The .gov means it's official. Official North Dakota websites will end in .gov. Before sharing sensitive information, make sure you're on a government site.
