Dr. Jeff Fastnacht, BPS Superintendent's page provides information about various facets of the proposed improvement plan across the district as in the post below. Learn more about the Bismarck Public Schools bond measure on the November ballot at bismarckschools.org/bond-election/the-plan.

Today’s post about a centralized kitchen brought a few good questions about how it would work and whether it would save money. Thank you for asking.

First, BPS is not taking a position for or against Measure 2. A centralized kitchen offers potential benefits whether that measure passes or fails. How we prepare meals is separate from how meals are paid for.

An independent study completed in May 2024 estimated approximately $533,574 in annual net operational savings.

The benefits would come from preparing foods like taco meat, spaghetti sauce, chili, and soups in larger batches, along with bread and other baked items. This would allow more scratch cooking, less reliance on commercially processed foods, more consistent meals, and less food waste. It would also reduce repeated preparation tasks and equipment needs across our school kitchens.

Students would still receive their meals at their school. School kitchen teams would handle final preparation, reheating, and serving. BPS already has a central warehouse and food delivery system. The centralized kitchen would build on that network.

Our goal is straightforward: provide quality meals, use more locally sourced foods, support our nutrition staff, address workforce shortages, and use resources wisely. Those goals matter regardless of how Measure 2 turns out.

The Human Relations Committee will be hosting a Community Conversation Forum from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on October 15 at The Dream Center, off South 12th Street (1805 Park Avenue). The free public event is designed to facilitate open conversations around the challenges our neighbors in Bismarck who face with mental health, learn what support already exists and identify where gaps remain.

The format of the program will include a panel discussion, followed by an opportunity for public input. Community service providers will have table space throughout the evening, with information about local resources. Attendees can connect with these organizations before the panel, from 5 to 6 p.m., and afterward, from 8 to 8:45 p.m.
