We were glad to welcome U.S. Senator Roger Marshall to the Baker University Wetlands & Discovery Center during his recent visit to eastern Kansas. 🌿

During the tour, Senator Marshall learned more about the collaborative work underway with Baker University, the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, and Ducks Unlimited to improve wetlands infrastructure and protect more than 600 acres for education, research, and conservation. Projects like this show how strong partnerships can make a lasting difference for wildlife, water quality, and future generations.

Thank you, Senator Marshall, for taking the time to visit and learn more about this important work.

Celebrate Earth Day, Nature Week and the power of partnerships with Ducks Unlimited and CF Industries.

Ducks Unlimited and CF Industries will host a special screening of Wings over Water for CF Industries employees on April 21 at 9:30 a.m.

Wings Over Water is a stunning documentary that follows the epic migratory journeys of three iconic bird species, the sandhill crane, the yellow warbler and the mallard, into the wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region, one of the most important yet least known ecosystems in North America.

The film shows how these birds rely on the region’s shallow wetlands to breed and raise their young, while highlighting the importance of this critical habitat. The Prairie Pothole Region is Ducks Unlimited's top conservation priority.

Sixty percent of North America’s ducks are hatched in these wetlands, and DU’s long-standing conservation efforts directly protect the very habitats featured in the film, wetlands that store carbon, filter water, reduce flooding, and sustain hundreds of bird species. By bringing these landscapes to the big screen, Wings Over Water amplifies DU’s mission to conserve and restore these vital ecosystems for wildlife and future generations.

The special screening is part of the CF Industries’ Nature Week activities.

Spotlight on South Dakota’s next generation of conservation champions. Six high schoolers from Castlewood and Watertown are making Ducks Unlimited history by spearheading the first and only student-led DU chapter and will host their first fundraising event on February 6th in Castlewood. Sawyer Craig, a junior and president of the group, says the chapter is open to any high school students interested in conservation and waterfowl habitat preservation. Ben Vaugh, DU’s senior regional director for South Dakota, is mentoring the group. Tickets are available at 605ducks.com, or you can contact Sawyer at [email protected]. All proceeds will go directly toward wetland and conservation efforts.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department released the results of its annual midwinter waterfowl survey and estimates that, despite the sub-zero temperatures and frozen conditions, about 135,000 Canada geese and 9,500 mallards remain in the state. The 10-year average (2017-2026) is 115,950 Canada geese and 13,400 mallards. Biologists conduct the survey to help gauge the winter distribution of waterfowl in the state and throughout the Central Flyway.

🌿 Collaboration in Action: Apex Clean Energy x Ducks Unlimited

In mid-September, Apex Clean Energy’s Environmental Team traveled to South Texas for their annual team retreat — and Ducks Unlimited was honored to host them at the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

During the visit, our DU biologists and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partners led a tour of wetland restoration projects that Apex has helped make possible through their continued support of DU’s conservation work. These efforts are restoring hundreds of acres of wetland and grassland habitat, improving water management, and benefiting migratory birds, bats, and other wildlife that depend on these ecosystems.

Apex’s commitment to renewable energy and conservation demonstrates the power of partnership in creating a more sustainable future — one where energy and healthy landscapes thrive together.

Thank you to the Apex Clean Energy Environmental Team for your dedication to wildlife and habitat conservation.

The Working Grasslands Partnership was established with a significant award from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). With this investment, DU and RCPP partners will work with South Dakota producers to restore more than 25,000 acres over five years. During the 10-year commitment, participants receive incentive payments during years one to three of the initial grass establishment phase. Technical assistance for seeding plans and infrastructure support for grazing systems is also provided. After year three, landowners can utilize the re-established grasslands for grazing and haying. Here is a short film that takes a look at this program and our relationships with landowners. Enjoy!

Ducks Unlimited is pleased to be the recipient of a RESTORE Colorado grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), thanks to a financial contribution from Chevron, for wetland conservation activities in the South Platte basin in northeastern Colorado. This grant will enable Ducks Unlimited to enhance the availability and quality of wetland habitats for ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. The project will help conserve 400 acres of wetland habitat and help improve capacity for waterfowl on more than 700 acres of public land!
