Kiwanis Club of Vulcan is delighted to welcome Verna Gates as our October General Body Meeting speaker.

In 2006, Verna Gates founded Fresh Air Family, an outdoor education program. At the time, she was serving as president of the local wildflower society where she noted a growing disconnect from nature. A self-taught ethnobotanist (the study of plant lore), she wanted to share her love for wildflowers. She was also working as a journalist for Reuters International, where she observed people making life-altering errors. She combined her eco interests with a goal to develop critical thinking in children, thus creating programs that have served thousands of children and their families. She is the author of 100 Things to Do in Birmingham and Fresh Air Family Alabama, a round-up of 75 places for families to enjoy the outdoors. She formerly worked for TIME Magazine and was on the founding crew of CNN.
