Wald Park by

The Wald Park Improvement project reimagines the city of Vestavia Hills longest standing public park, as a cohesive, multi-generational destination that balances recreation, ecology, and civic identity. Anchored along the primary vehicular artery in the city, the park presents a welcoming and expanded outdoor space, transforming a previously fragmented site into an integrated network of indoor and outdoor experiences.

The design organizes the park through clear circulation and visual connections, linking athletic fields, walking trails, playgrounds, and gathering spaces into a unified whole.

Material selections and form draw inspiration from existing city structures, adapted to pavilion architypes with familiar character that reflect the city’s architectural identity.

Cedar Ridge at Kirkwood by the River by

The Kirkwood by the River campus serves as the location for the Cedar Ridge Cottage community, and its natural setting offers a unique combination of wooded hillside landscape coupled with a convenient suburban location.

As such, the design of the cottages echoes traditional mountain communities in the southeast, incorporating natural exterior finishes, such as stone and cedar, as well as views to the extraordinary landscape through screened porches, included on each model. Kirkwood by the River, a senior living community in Birmingham, Alabama, offers three cottage styles for independent living situated on land adjacent to the Cahaba River.

The cottages are a new typology for the Kirkwood campus, and the design process incorporated significant feedback from focus groups organized by the owner and the marketing team.

Each of the model types is designed to support gracious, independent living: floor plans feature open living spaces and wider circulation paths for accessibility, including zero-step entries at grade and at the enclosed garages. Age-friendly fixtures and finishes enhance the resident experience by increasing usability and independence, all while reflecting the mountain home aesthetic established by the original Kirkwood campus.

2026 Design Awards Feature
Smith Lake Glass and Stone House by Barrett Architecture Studio

The design concept for this home maximizes glazing for views to the lake and anchors the interior spaces around a central stone wall.

The glass is floor to ceiling on the upper level and extends continuously from one corner of the house to the other – only broken by the intersecting stone wall. The stone wall is pierced by openings whenever passageways or views are needed. The wall greets visitors alongside the entry door and travels through the public spaces of the house.

The interior finishes are simple and elegant, while allowing the drama of the lake to unfold around almost every space in the house.

Northeast Community YMCA by

Since 1965, the Northeast Community YMCA has been an integral part of the Roebuck community. Once a thriving Birmingham, Alabama suburb centered on family-oriented activities, the area has experienced increasing challenges related to violent crime and economic hardship.

To address these issues, a new community center was developed to restore opportunity and hope. The project revitalizes the aging recreation facility while creating a campus through meaningful partnerships with Habitat for Humanity, Christ Health Center, and Impact Family Counseling.

The reimagined YMCA now serves as a comprehensive community resource center. It provides a pathway to homeownership through 22 new single-family homes, access to world-class healthcare for low-to-moderate income earners, and on-site family counseling services. Expanded spaces and an interior classroom addition support academic and enrichment programs for youth and teens and activities for seniors while bringing age-appropriate playgrounds to the community.
