One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center

One Place provides services for people experiencing domestic, intimate partner, and sexual violence.

Located in Avondale and primarily serve residents of Jefferson County. We are a safe place to seek help, guidance, and learn about your options. At One Place, a person may speak to as many agency representatives as he or she chooses. A police report is neither required nor expected, unless you plan to pursue prosecution of perpetrator(s).

We are honored to announce that Ginny Willings will be serving as the 2026 Event Chair for Hidden Reality, Relentless Hope.

As the needs of our community and the survivors we serve continue to grow, so must our capacity to meet the need.

Since January, One Place Family Justice Center has welcomed four new team members—Brandy, Hannah, Emma, and A'Niya—whose expertise strengthens our ability to provide coordinated, survivor-centered services for individuals and families impacted by domestic and sexual violence.

One Place Family Justice Center, in partnership with SafeHouse of Shelby County, has begun offering free, on-site forensic strangulation examinations for survivors of domestic violence. Using specialized equipment and evidence-based protocols, these exams help identify injuries that may not be visible to the naked eye while documenting critical forensic evidence.

Within the first week of offering this service, several survivors were able to access these examinations through One Place, underscoring the critical need for this resource in our community.

Strangulation is one of the most dangerous forms of abuse and a significant indicator of increased risk for future lethality in domestic violence cases. By providing these examinations locally, survivors can access timely medical assessment, forensic documentation, and coordinated support services in one place.

One Place Family Justice Center will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday weekend. We will resume normal business hours on Monday, July 6.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or sexual violence, please remember that help is always available. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you need support while our office is closed, you can contact the YWCA Central Alabama Crisis Line.

The DV murder-suicide that took place on the post-partum unit of Brookwood Hospital Sunday night is not just an isolated act of violence. It reflects a larger and deeply troubling reality.

Research shows that homicide is a leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women in the United States, with intimate partner violence playing a major role. Pregnancy does not shield someone from abuse—in many cases, it increases risk.

Sunday’s tragedy is also a reminder that Domestic Violence is not “just” something that occurs between two people behind closed doors. It spills out into our community, affecting public health and public safety.

Our Executive Director spoke last night to WBRC and CBS42 news to talk about the intersection of domestic violence and community violence, and the risk of lethality during pregnancy and post-partum.
