The DV murder-suicide that took place on the post-partum unit of Brookwood Hospital Sunday night is not just an isolated act of violence. It reflects a larger and deeply troubling reality.

Research shows that homicide is a leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women in the United States, with intimate partner violence playing a major role. Pregnancy does not shield someone from abuse—in many cases, it increases risk.

Sunday’s tragedy is also a reminder that Domestic Violence is not “just” something that occurs between two people behind closed doors. It spills out into our community, affecting public health and public safety.

Our Executive Director spoke last night to WBRC and CBS42 news to talk about the intersection of domestic violence and community violence, and the risk of lethality during pregnancy and post-partum.

This morning we gathered partners in law enforcement, prosecution, victim services, public health, and other community agencies to recognize Human Trafficking Awareness Month with our first MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) session of the year. We heard from speakers from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Did you know that the large majority of human trafficking victims are brought into the situation by intimate partners, family members, or people they know and trust?

Dear Friend of One Place:

In 2025, we provided life-changing and life-saving assistance to 365 people experiencing the darkest moments of their lives.

We provided nearly 3,500 units of service that included coordination with law enforcement, arranging forensic medical exams, conducting danger assessments, providing case management services, providing resources and referrals, and being a steady presence with emotional support.

Our team attended hundreds of court hearings with our clients to be a listening ear and to do as we promise we will do for every client: walk alongside them for as long as it takes so they know that they are never alone.

We were able to pay power bills, help people flee domestic violence by paying deposits and rent, ensure that victims facing food insecurity could feed their families, and made sure our clients without transportation were able to come to One Place for services and could attend their court hearings and doctor appointments.

We worked with our community partners to create long-lasting systems change.

We provided pathways to hope and healing for families across the region.

This impact is only made possible because of the support we receive from our community.

This New Year's Eve, we invite you to celebrate our impact and ask for your support to help carry us into 2026 as we prepare to serve the hundreds of people we know will be seeking our support.

You can be their light, by making a year end gift today.
