We say yes to cornstarch and love.
What do you do with fifty pounds of cornstarch?
1. Cooking and Baking: Cornstarch is commonly used as a thickening agent in sauces, gravies, soups, and stews. You can also use it in baking recipes to lighten the texture of cakes and cookies.
2. Cornstarch Slime: A fun activity, especially for kids, is making cornstarch slime or “oobleck.” Mix cornstarch with water (and food coloring if desired) to create a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves both like a solid and a liquid.
3. Homemade Playdough: You can use cornstarch to make homemade playdough, which is a great activity for children.
4. Cleaning: Cornstarch can be used as a natural cleaning agent. For example, it can be used to polish silver, clean windows, and freshen carpets.
5. Personal Care: Cornstarch can be used as a natural body powder or dry shampoo. It’s also an ingredient in some homemade deodorant recipes.
6. Gardening: Cornstarch can be used in the garden as a natural antifungal treatment for plants.
7. Arts and Crafts: Cornstarch can be used in various craft projects, such as making homemade paint, paper mache, or biodegradable packing peanuts.
Remember, while cornstarch is versatile, it’s important to store properly to prevent it from getting damp or clumpy. If you discover you cannot use all of it, consider sharing some with friends or family who might need it for their own cooking or crafting projects.
