Birmingham Territory Chapter DAR was honored to present Cameron Allen of Homewood High School our good citizenship winner a certificate and check. Cameron also won the Central District and received a certificate and check for that as well. She read her essay to our chapter. Debbie Reid is our good citizenship chair and does an excellent job each year.
Today’s program was presented by Pam Porterfield and her sister Pat Brooks on “fearless bags.” These bags are given to sheriff and police departments for children in crisis situations. We appreciate their sharing this worthy cause with our chapter.

Women's Issues January -Leadership Lessons from the American Revolution
➢ Be patient: Though independence was not declared until 1776, fighting began as early as 1775. The war of independence didn’t end until 1783. That’s 8 years of conflict and uncertainty. But the
Founding Fathers knew the value of being patient. In fact, Benjamin Franklin is often quoted as having said ‘He that can have patience can have what he will.’
➢ Persevere: George Washington faced enormous hurdles as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. He was endlessly faced with lack of supplies, financing and the constant threat of his unpaid soldiers abandoning him. Perhaps even more discouraging was the string of military defeats Washington endured. “George Washington lost battle after battle but he never lost the war. He
always lived to fight again another day.”
➢ Be confident: Not everyone was in support of the American Revolution. Even Benjamin Franklin’s son, William Franklin, remained a ‘loyalist’. The exact amount of support for the revolution remains a point of historic debate. Nevertheless, the founding of a new nation required an enormous amount of confidence from those who founded it.

Women's Issues Committee December- Financial Education. The financial burden of the holidays can create excessive stress during a season intended to be full of joy, connection, and generosity. Polls show that almost 90% of Americans feel some kind of anxiety or stress about the holidays Between gifts, travel, parties, food, donations, and decorations, Americans are spending more than ever to keep up with their holiday traditions. On gifts alone, they are spending approximately $920 per person, up from $885 per person last year, with total holiday spending exceeding $1 trillion nationwide. This is especially true for parents of young children.

Whether it’s getting them their dream gift or spending on travel or experiences, every parent wants the holidays to be a memorable and joyful time for their children and the pressure is on them to spend generously to make it happen. According to WalletJoy’s 2019 Holiday Wallet Woes Report, 18% of parents say their spending has “no limits” when it comes to their kids. And 13% say they’d max out their credit cards to give their kids the best holiday ever. At a time when consumer debt is at an all-time high and so many are already struggling to stay afloat financially, it’s no wonder that the financial stress of the holidays is causing people to re-evaluate their spending. The data found that, of parents with children under 18, over one-third (34%) would avoid the practice of gifting (receiving or giving) if it meant they could avoid the related expenditures. Overall among all adults, the findings were similar.

October Women's issues Minute: Mary Ball Washington’s Breast Cancer – Early in her experience with breast cancer, Mary might have been treated with home remedies, such as a recipe for “Lumps or Swelling in the Breast,” which was recorded in the manuscript housekeeping book of Martha Washington’s youngest granddaughter, Nelly Custis Lewis (1779-1852). It called for spreading the whites of two raw eggs on a piece of linen and applying it while wet to the problem area. The recipe closed with the reminder that the linen “must be frequently moistened in the egg.”

By the summer of 1789, two Fredericksburg physicians were treating Mrs. Washington. The first, Doctor Elisha Hall (1754-1814), was a first cousin of Doctor Benjamin Rush (1746-1813), a prominent doctor, politician, and civic leader in Philadelphia, who was actually consulted on this particular case. The following letter from Rush to Hall gives a good idea of the treatment options available, as well as Mrs. Washington’s prognosis: “The respectable age and character of your venerable patient lead me to regret that it is not in my power to suggest a remedy for the cure of the disorder you have described in her breast.
