Great news!

“Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama on Tuesday commuted the death sentence of a 53-year-old man convicted in the 1995 killing of a sheriff’s deputy, citing ‘not enough direct evidence to carry out the most serious punishment.’…”

“Mr. Johnson’s conviction largely relied on the testimony of a woman, Violet Ellison, who said during his trial that she had heard him confess to the crime during a three-way phone call. Ms. Ellison received a $5,000 reward from the state for her help. That information was not initially disclosed and was revealed to Mr. Johnson’s lawyers two decades later. His lawyers also noted that no physical evidence had ever linked him to the crime.”

Toforest Johnson’s conviction in the 1995 killing of a sheriff’s deputy relied on the testimony of a woman who was paid a $5,000 reward by the state for providing information.

Today’s Birmingham Hub’s Mass Meeting at Railroad Park put action items behind our faith. Thank you to all who attended and committed moving forward. From pews to power, we’re raising our voice to rescue our vote!

Speakers and musicians included members of The House of Restoration Mission, West End Community Church, Songs in the Key of Resistance, and Our Voice Our Vote.
