Bib & Tucker Sew-Op

Bib & Tucker Sew-Op Bib & Tucker Sew-Op is a non-profit organization that teaches sewing skills through projects that give back to the community. Sewing can heal the world!

IRS-recognized 501c3 non-profit organization since August 2014. We began as a small sewing bee at Inglenook Library in Tarrant, AL. One of our founding members, Lillis Taylor, began teaching quilting classes in Woodlawn through ArtReach (a program of Alys Stephens Center's ArtPlay) and space within DISCO (Desert Island Supply Co) opened up and the rest was history. We incorporated and became an IR

S-recognized 501c3 non-profit organization in December, 2014 and moved to our current space in July, 2016. We fulfill our mission during weekly sewing sessions every Tuesday from 11 to 3. We have a vision of facilitating a cottage industry of textile manufacturing in Birmingham that would provide flexible income opportunities to heads of single-parent households.

On June 20th and 27th we have a spectacular two part knitting class for those who have no experience with knitting or have tried and failed. This class is for students age 16 and up. Taught by the skilled and knowledgeable Mary Kaiser and broken down into two classes so you won't walk away after one class feeling lost.

In the first session of Beginning Knitting, students will start with a brief introduction to the craft of knitting, focusing on how it is different from crochet and on some of the many styles of the craft throughout the world. Then students get started right away with casting on, getting the first row of stitches on the needles, and then you practice the knit stitch, creating a garter stitch scarf by knitting every row. We will spend some time practicing the movements to develop muscle memory. As we conclude the first session, we will talk about how to read your knitting after you put it down so that you can pick up and continue knitting at home.

The second, follow-up session will begin with answering questions, trouble-shooting, and going over any information that was missed the first time. We’ll get back on track with more practice, and we’ll talk about additional resources you can use to explore the craft of knitting further. We’ll talk about types of yarn, tools that you really need (and those you don’t need to bother with), and the most helpful knitting books and online guides.

Sew-Op members spend at least one Tuesday a month working on baby quilts. The quilts are donated to Nurse Family Partnership and are gifted to local moms and babies.

The demand is high and we try hard to keep up but sometimes we need help from the local quilt community. We want to think the quilters at the Birmingham Quilt Guild for helping us make the last pickup extra sweet and cozy!

Look at these beautiful quilts!
