EMOTIONAL ABUSE CAN CHANGE HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF đź’ś

When someone constantly tells you that you're stupid, unattractive, worthless, difficult, crazy, unlovable, or lucky anybody puts up with you…

eventually their voice can become the voice inside your own head.

That's what makes emotional abuse so dangerous.

It doesn't just hurt your feelings.

It can change how you see yourself.

Healing means separating who you really are from who somebody convinced you that you were.

And that can take time.

Give survivors room to rediscover themselves.

“BUT THEY SEEMED SO NICE.” 💜

Abusive people don't necessarily abuse everybody they meet.

They may be charming.

Successful.

Funny.

Popular.

Helpful.

Respected in the community.

And still be abusive behind closed doors.

That's why telling a survivor:

“I can't see them doing that.”

can cause more damage than you realize.

You weren't there.

You didn't live it.

You don't know what happened when the doors closed.

When someone finds the courage to tell you they're being harmed, don't make them prove their pain before you're willing to listen.

Believe enough to listen.

CHILDREN ARE WATCHING TOO đź’ś

Domestic violence doesn't stay between two adults.

Children hear the arguments.

They notice the fear.

They feel the tension.

They learn what relationships look like from what surrounds them.

And even when adults think they're hiding it, children often know far more than we realize.

Breaking cycles means giving young people something different to witness:

Respect.

Communication.

Safety.

Boundaries.

Accountability.

Healthy love.

Protecting children also means protecting the environments they're growing up in.

SOMETIMES YOU DON’T REALIZE HOW BAD IT WAS UNTIL YOU’RE OUT 💜

When chaos becomes normal, you learn how to function inside of it.

You learn their moods.

Their triggers.

What not to say.

When to be quiet.

How to explain their behavior to everybody else.

How to make yourself smaller just to keep the peace.

And sometimes you don't realize how much of yourself disappeared until you finally experience peace.

That's why healing isn't simply about leaving.

Sometimes healing is learning that you no longer have to live in survival mode.

Peace shouldn't feel unfamiliar.

MEN CAN BE SURVIVORS TOO đź’ś

Domestic violence does not belong to one gender.

Men can experience emotional abuse.

Physical violence.

Financial control.

Sexual violence.

Threats.

Manipulation.

Coercive control.

And many remain silent because they're afraid they'll be laughed at, embarrassed, judged, or simply not believed.

There should never be shame attached to asking for help.

Survivors deserve to be heard—period.

This month, when we say we stand with survivors, we mean survivors.

ABUSE DOESN’T ALWAYS START LOOKING LIKE ABUSE 💜

Sometimes it starts looking like attention.

“Where are you?”

“Who are you with?”

“Why didn't you answer?”

Then it becomes:

“Don't wear that.”

“I don't like your friends.”

“You don't need to go anywhere without me.”

“Give me your password.”

And eventually, someone else's control starts getting confused with love.

Jealousy isn't proof that someone loves you.

Possession isn't protection.

Control isn't commitment.

Healthy love does not require you to become smaller so someone else can feel bigger.

FINANCIAL ABUSE IS REAL đź’ś

Imagine wanting to leave—but you don't have access to your own money.

Your partner controls the accounts.

Questions every purchase.

Prevents you from working.

Ruins your credit.

Takes your paycheck.

Puts bills or debt in your name.

Or deliberately keeps you financially dependent.

Then somebody says:

“If it was that bad, you would've left.”

Left and gone where?

This is why economic empowerment matters in survivor work.

Helping someone rebuild can mean helping them find employment, establish credit, start a business, develop new skills, or finally control their own finances.

Financial independence can be part of safety.

That's one reason this work matters so deeply to WE WIN.

“WHY DIDN’T THEY JUST LEAVE?” 💜

Stop asking survivors why they stayed before asking what made leaving so difficult.

Maybe there was nowhere safe to go.

Maybe the abuser controlled the money.

Maybe children were involved.

Maybe there were threats.

Maybe they had been isolated from everyone who could help.

Maybe they left before—and things became even more dangerous.

Maybe after hearing “Nobody else will ever want you” long enough, part of them started believing it.

Leaving an abusive relationship isn't always as simple as packing a bag and walking out the door.

Instead of asking, “Why did you stay?”

Try asking:

“What did you need that you weren't getting?”

Compassion changes conversations.

💜 **IT DOESN’T HAVE TO LEAVE A BRUISE TO BE ABUSE.**

One of the biggest misconceptions about domestic violence is that someone has to put their hands on you for it to “count.”

They don’t.

Abuse can sound like:

“You’re nothing without me.”

“Nobody else is going to want you.”

“Give me your password.”

“Why do you need your own money?”

“You’re crazy. That never happened.”

It can look like controlling your money. Monitoring your phone. Isolating you from family and friends. Constant accusations. Threats. Humiliation. Manipulation. Making you afraid of what mood they’ll be in when they walk through the door.

And sometimes the person experiencing it doesn’t even recognize it as abuse yet—because there are no bruises to point to.

**But bruises are not the only evidence of harm.**

Mental abuse is real.
Emotional abuse is real.
Financial abuse is real.
Coercive control is real.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re talking about the parts of domestic violence people don’t always see.

Because sometimes the deepest wounds are the ones nobody else knows are there.

💜 **It doesn’t have to leave a bruise to leave damage.**

đź’ś October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

A new month is here, but for far too many women, the struggle didn’t end when the calendar changed.

Domestic violence doesn’t always look like a black eye.

Sometimes it looks like financial control.
Isolation.
Threats.
Manipulation.
Walking on eggshells.
Starting over with nothing.
Or staying because leaving doesn’t feel safe—or even possible yet.

At WE WIN Organization, Inc., we believe survivors deserve more than awareness.

They deserve support. Safety. Opportunity. Economic stability. Healing. And the power to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

That’s why our work goes beyond surviving. Through mentorship, workforce and career development, entrepreneurship, leadership development, advocacy, and survivor-centered support, we help women and girls move toward what comes next.

And this October, we’re going to TALK about it. 💜

We’re going to talk about the things people don’t always see.
We’re going to honor survivors.
We’re going to remember those whose lives were taken.
We’re going to challenge the silence and stigma.
And we’re going to remind women everywhere:

Your story does not have to end where the violence happened.

There can be life after abuse.
There can be purpose after pain.
There can be another chapter.

This is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
And at WE WIN, awareness is only the beginning.
