Did you know? As very active animals, Sugar Gliders love to run in an exercise wheel. Many of the commercially available "exercise" wheels are not truely suitable for Sugar Gliders. Any wheel that features a cross bar or trunnions that face inward, could be dangerous for your Sugar Glider. In addition, very few of these offer true exercise. As a free spinning wheel, there is no resistance to actually kmake the Sugar Glider work to keep the wheel spinning. When choosing your wheel, look for features that are Sugar Glider friendly. PVC running mesh or mesh that is either PVC or powder coated are advisable choices. Also look for wheels that have open face fronts. This allows the glider easy in and easy out access as well as making it ewasy for you to remove the glider from the wheel if the need arises. Wheels with ball bearings tend to be more efficient and have a longer lifespan under the vigorous use that many gliders can put a wheel through. Lastly, a wheel that uses resistance to make turning it more difficult will ensure your Sugar Glider truely gets exercise by having to work hard to keep the wheel in motion. A healthy Glider is a much happier Glider and generally enjoys a much longer life.

Did you know? Sugar Gliders have very unique and strong emotions. They bond on a level similar to a child to a parent. Disciplining them improperly can damage this bond heavily. Physical punishment is never the right answer. If you must discipline them, mimic the mother glider's way. Scold them verbally in their language by quickly and harshly making a "Cht Cht" sound at them. By speaking in their language, they will understand properly and respond better to you and your bond.

Did you know? In nature, Gliders get the majority of their liquid intake from the fruits and vegetables they eat. While pelleted food may provide an easy and balanced diet, it poses other considerations. Like us, Gliders prefer a variety of foods in their diet. Alternating the mixture of their dinners will keep the flavors exciting. Pelleted foods lack this variety and also lack moisture. A balanced natural diet may seem more complicated, but your Gliders will enjoy it much more than pre-bagged pellets.

Did you know? In nature, Sugar Gliders are social creatures that live in colonies. Common colonies can include 5 to 8 Sugar Gliders on average. Most Sugar Gliders do not enjoy living alone, though there are exceptions. Most Sugar Glider pets do best in a cage with 1 to 2 additional cage mates. This gives them social interaction with the others for sleeping and playing. If you find yourself unable or unwilling to adopt a second Glider, be sure to spend plenty of time playing with them. A Glider who does not get enough attention can become very depressed. Often, but not always, this can lead to poor health. They may stop exercising or eating properly. They may begin to over-groom themselves resulting in thin or bald patches in their fur. They may even become depressed enough to start chewing on their feet or tails which can lead to the need to amputate the limb, forever changing their life.

Did you know? Sugar Gliders are very active animals. They love to run and climb and jump. This requires a good bit of space. An appropriate cage for your Sugar Glider should be about two foot, cubed (2ft tall x 2ft wide x 2ft deep). This provides adequate space for him or her to play and live comfortablly. If you have more then one Glider, the cage size should increase by about 50% to ensure their is space for all of them to enjoy. The metal of the cage should be coated in a non-toxic PVC coating or powder coated. Bare metal and galvanized metal can be toxic to your glider leading to sickness or even death. And, to ensure your Sugar Glider stays in their cage when they are suppose to, the spacing of the bars for the cage should be no farther apart that 1/2 inch. If they can get their head through the bars, they can get their body through. Even if they can't their body through, do you really want then to have their head stuck between the bars, possibly for long periods of time when you are asleep or not home to help them?

Did you know? Your Sugar Glider should be on a very balanced diet. While they eat most fruits and vegetables, not all are safe for them to eat. Each fruit or vegetable has a nutritional value that includes it's calcium and phosphourous content. Calcium is important for healthy growth, strong muscles and good bones. Phosphourous negates the value of calcium. For every 1 unit of phosphourous, 1 unit of calcium is prevented from being absorbed by the Sugar Glider's body. Lack of calcium leads to weight loss, brittle bones, weak muscles and eventually to HLP (Hind Leg Paralysis). HLP is a deadly disease that will cause a slow and painful death to your Glider if not treated in time. The best way to prevent this disease is to balance your glider's diet. The diet should have a calcium to phosphourous ratio of 2 to 1. Isn't it worth the time to check these values for the foods they eat to make sure they live a long happy life?

Did you know? To maintain health and well-being, your Sugar Glider should see a qualified Vet at least once a year. Many common issues with Sugar Gliders may not be readily apparent to an untrained eye. Yearly Vet visits and proper testing can prevent or catch illnesses before they harm your Glider. It would be a good idea to ask your vet for a f***l smear and blood testing.
