The history of Kelly Ingram VFW Post No. 668 is a remarkable story of veterans continuing to serve long after returning home.
The Post’s original charter was issued March 17, 1921. After operating under earlier names, the Post was reactivated on February 7, 1928, as Kelly Ingram Post, honoring Kelly Osmond Ingram of Oneonta, Alabama. Ingram served aboard the USS Cassin during World War I and was killed on October 15, 1917, when the destroyer was struck by a German torpedo. The historical account identifies him as the first American sailor to lose his life in World War I.
Post 668 built a proud record of service throughout Birmingham and Jefferson County. Its members sponsored baseball, basketball, bowling and softball teams; supported veterans through annual poppy sales; provided entertainment for hospitalized veterans in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery; and maintained an Honor Guard that had provided military funerals for approximately 200 World War II veterans whose remains were returned from overseas.
Their commitment also reached Alabama’s schools. The Post presented American flags to numerous schools and furnished schools throughout Birmingham and Jefferson County with copies of the Declaration of Independence supplied by the VFW.
Post members participated in annual Memorial Day services, decorated veterans’ graves and helped preserve the memory of those who gave their lives for our nation. The historical record also documents Post 668’s home at 829 North 20th Street in Birmingham, across from the City Auditorium. And is now located at
1801 11th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35234
These records remind us that the VFW has always been about more than meetings and membership numbers. It is about service, remembrance, community and veterans taking care of veterans.
From the veterans who built Post 668 generations ago to those carrying the VFW mission forward today, their legacy deserves to be remembered.
