Golden Arrows Edge Guinea 30–28 to Stay Alive in World Cup Qualification Race

Nigeria’s Senior Men Handball team, the Golden Arrows, kept their 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship hopes alive with a hard-fought 30–28 victory over Guinea in the 5th–8th place placement match at the 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.

The playoff encounter, which serves as Africa’s qualification pathway for the continent’s fifth team to the 2027 World Championship in Germany, saw the Golden Arrows show grit and composure, even after being reduced to six men in the first half. Nigeria’s Faruk Yusuf was shown a red card, forcing the team to dig deep for the remainder of the contest.

Despite the setback, Nigeria went into the break with a slim 16–14 advantage and maintained their intensity after the restart to hold off a determined Guinea side.

Azeez Sulaiman delivered a standout performance, finishing with eight goals to earn the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, while John Shagari matched him with eight goals of his own to spearhead Nigeria’s attack.

The win sets up a decisive clash 5th placement tie against Angola, who defeated Morocco 27-20; with a place at the 2027 World Championship at stake.

Victory in the next game would see Nigeria return to the global stage for the first time since their last appearance in 1999.

With momentum on their side, the Golden Arrows will now turn their focus to one final hurdle in their quest for a historic World Cup qualification.

Morocco 2025: Super Eagles on the way to achieving great things under Chelle - Gusau

Nigeria’s senior men national team, Super Eagles, is close to running on auto-pilot and will definitely achieve a lot of success under the present technical crew headed by Franco-Malian tactician Éric Chelle, says President of Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau.

Gusau, also President of the sub-regional bloc WAFU B, opined that with what the Super Eagles have shown at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, in which they finished in third place, the three-time African champions have turned the corner from the huge disappointment of consecutive FIFA World Cup misses, and now set to rise to new heights.

“Actually, when we landed in Morocco towards the end of last year, our objective was to win the AFCON trophy and be the champions of Africa. Today, we finished in third place and won the bronze medals instead. We missed our target but my joy is in the way our team played. They have played with zest and patriotic fervour, and showed resilience and character.



“Big kudos to the huge support and motivation that we continue to receive from the Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission. Without the support of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and the Government as a whole, we would not have been able to do anything.

“The NFF is proud of the team’s campaign and will continue to do its best to encourage, support and motivate the team as we go forward. As the head of a hard-working technical crew, Mr. Chelle has done exceedingly well within the one year he has been with us. He has shown enormous capacity and we will continue to work with him.”

The NFF supremo’s evaluation of the 48-year-old strategist comes against the backdrop of a groundswell of support for Nigeria to continue with the manager that she signed on in January last year, in the middle of a tottering FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

In the one year that followed, the man has led Nigeria’s ‘A’ team in 18 competitive matches, losing none. From a no-hope situation, he steered the Eagles to stand a chance of qualification for the World Cup on the final day of the qualifying series, and ultimately got a Playoff ticket. Progress was halted via a penalty shootout, which also botched a Final appearance at the AFCON, but it was also the same route the team took in clinching a 9th AFCON bronze medal at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca on Saturday.

“If you coach Nigeria, you must win everything,” a pragmatic Chelle told CAFonline two months ago. That realization and imbibed etho has continued to guide his work, in which he has won 11 of 17 competitive matches and drawn six in regulation time.

In Morocco, Chelle guided Nigeria to its highest-ever tally of 14 goals in a single AFCON, with the team unbeaten in regulation time in any of its seven matches, and showing class and character in games against fellow continental powerhouses Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. Tanzania and Uganda, who will joint-host next year’s AFCON finals alongside Kenya, also got spanked by the Super Eagles.

In winning their first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, the Eagles scored a total of 8 goals against Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria. In 1994 in Tunisia, they scored a total of 9 goals. When winning in South Africa in 2013, the Super Eagles netted 11 times.

“The journey to the next AFCON starts immediately (in March). We do not have the luxury of time to continue dwelling on what we have done here. We must set to work immediately. For now, we are excited about the squad that we have. Remember also that a couple of very good players missed the tournament as a result of injury. The bottomline is that the future looks very bright,” Gusau added.

Victory on Saturday meant Nigeria has now mounted the podium in 17 of its 21 appearances at the AFCON. The only times she has failed to medal were in 1963, 1982, 2008 and 2021.

Morocco 2025: Super Eagles edge Carthage Eagles to sail into Round of 16

Nigeria held on with tenacity to defeat Tunisia 3-2 in Fès on Saturday and book an early spot in the Round of 16 of ongoing the 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals.

A fabulous performance saw the Eagles lead 3-0 after 70 minutes, with goals by Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman, but a tense finish was assured when the Carthage Eagles pulled two back with three minutes to go and began to believe.

The three-time champions left no one in doubt of their objective from the first blast of Malian referee Boubou Traore’s whistle, as they imposed themselves on the game and asked several questions of the Tunisian defence within the first quarter-hour, as Osimhen, Lookman and Akor Adams probed relentlessly.

After coming close on a number of occasions, Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 17th minute, when he stabbed in as the Tunisian goalkeeper parried a shot by Adams. His effort was ruled offside.

The talismanic forward would not be denied his first goal of this AFCON, as he leaped high to head the ball firmly into the net in the 44th minute after a deep cross by Lookman.

Five minutes into the second half, Nigeria were 2-0 up, as Lookman’s teasing corner was all that captain Wilfred Ndidi needed to score his first goal for Nigeria at senior level, on his 73rd cap.

The Eagles were relentless in chasing every ball, and it was no surprise when Lookman, who had assisted the first two goals, scored his second of the tournament by leaving the defence in tatters and striking the ball into the net through the low upright, after a brilliant team move that saw Alex Iwobi and Osimhen exploit gaps in the Carthage Eagles’ rearguard.

Iwobi, on his 93rd cap, was again magnificent with excellent ball distribution on the park.

Tunisia got one goal back off a free-kick from the right that was headed into the net by Montassar Talbi, and in the 87th minute, Ali Abdi made no mistake from the spot after Traore consulted the VAR and decided a foul had been committed in Nigeria’s vital area.

The goal made for a tense finish, but Nigeria held on to pick maximum points and leap to the top of the group, with six points, ahead of Tuesday’s clash with the Cranes of Uganda.
