Birmingham Family YMCA The Birmingham Family YMCA facility is currently closed. It will re-open for Summer Day Camp on June 15.

For over 168 years, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit has served communities in the four counties of Southeast Michigan including more than 95 years in the City of Birmingham. For the first years of the branch’s existence, the YMCA used area facilities and homes to conduct its meetings and programs. Soon, the YMCA purchased a home on Maple Avenue to coordinate the activities of the association. A b

rand new state-of-the-art facility was built in 1955 at a cost of $1 million. Since then, the Birmingham Family YMCA served as a community centered for people of all ages and abilities. The Y campus became a key resource providing a safe and educational atmosphere where relationships developed, healthy activities conducted and family support services provided to the communities surrounding Birmingham. The Birmingham YMCA is also home of the renowned Birmingham Blue Dolphins; one of southeastern Michigan’s most esteemed and accomplished swim teams graduating more than a few outstanding collegiate and Olympic-caliber swimmers.

Honoring the incredible legacy of Noboru Saito Sensei 🥋

From ranking among the top heavyweight judoka in Kanagawa, Japan, to becoming a lifelong teacher, mentor, and leader in the United States, Saito Sensei’s impact on judo is profound.

He served as President of the USJF, led national development initiatives, and was the first Kata Development Chair—recommended by Keiko Fukuda.

As an elite referee, he officiated at the World Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
His contributions earned him the USA Judo Lifetime Achievement Award (2012) and the IJF Special Recognition Award (2016), culminating in his 2020 induction honoring a lifetime dedicated to judo.

Sensei Saito has been with the Birmingham Family YMCA since November of 1985. A true Legacy to our YMCA mission and a pillar in the Community. People came far and wide just for the chance to train with him, even just for one class!

Sensei, we thank you deeply for your commitment to the Birmingham Family YMCA and for the many lives you have impacted along the way!
