Black men face a prostate cancer crisis that doesn’t get enough attention. About 1 in 6 Black men will be diagnosed in their lifetime.

The numbers are real: Black men have a 67% higher diagnosis rate than White men. They’re more than twice as likely to die from the disease.

Roy Johnson knows this fight. He’s here because early detection works—when caught early, prostate cancer has a 99% cure rate. But too many Black men don’t get screened. Too many don’t know their risk. Too many die when it could have been prevented.

Julie Meyerson Winner recently joined our Board of Directors. For Julie, this is personal. Her father, Ed Meyerson, co-founded MSF alongside Mike Slive back in 2016, and now Julie is stepping in to help carry that legacy forward, alongside her sisters Laura and Stephanie and Executive Director Anna Slive.

“We had the privilege of watching our father, Ed Meyerson, and Mike Slive build something they believed could truly change lives,” Julie said. “It is an honor to help carry that legacy forward as we work toward a future where no family has to face this disease.”

One year ago, Roy Johnson shared that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In this article, he reflects on everything he's learned over the past year about faith, family, gratitude, and the importance of early detection.

Roy's willingness to tell his story is helping encourage men to have th! difficult conversations they may have been putting off, and reminding us that early detection can make all the difference.
