✨FocusFirst Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Meet Saraf! Originally from Bangladesh, Saraf combines creativity, curiosity, with a passion for serving others. She previously ran her own custom cake business, turning sweet ideas into beautiful creations. When she's not baking, you'll likely find her planning her next adventure. She has explored 12 states so far and dreams of visiting all 50 someday. 🌎✈️

Over the past year, Saraf has also volunteered at the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center in Tuscaloosa, where her experiences have inspired a growing interest in public health and community service. She hopes to continue her education and make a meaningful impact by helping improve the health and well-being of others.

Saraf has made an impact at Impact America by:

👁️ Attending 11 vision screenings
👧 Screening 579 children
❤️ Helping identify 55 children in need of follow-up care through our partners at Sight Savers America

The 2025-2026 FocusFirst season has officially concluded, and we are excited to share our remarkable achievements! 💙👓

This season, we successfully screened 38,517 children across the state of Alabama. Our dedicated part-time vision screeners have worked tirelessly over the past 10 months to reach this milestone. Out of those screened, 3,665 children did not pass the screening and were referred to our wonderful partner, Sight Savers America, for follow-up care. We visited a total of 1,036 sites across all 67 counties, making this an outstanding year!

As we begin planning our program for the 2026-2027 year, we are excited to continue screening more children in Alabama. Stay tuned!

Meet Trey, one of our dedicated volunteers from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine! Since joining FocusFirst in Fall 2025, Trey has made an incredible impact by:

👁️ Attending 18 vision screenings
👧 Screening 969 children
❤️ Helping identify 109 children in need of follow-up care through our partners at Sight Savers America

This year, Trey set the record for the most children screened by a volunteer!

A rising third-year medical student pursuing ophthalmology, Trey is already making a difference in children’s lives through early vision care and community service.

Impact America's offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, in recognition of Memorial Day and in rememberance of all those who have died in service to our country and our communties.

Our office will remain closed May 26 to May 29 for Summer Break as our team takes time to rest and recenter before we begin final preparations for our new program year, which begins on July 1.

The FocusFirst program is growing, and we’re looking for 3 passionate, strategic, and community-minded Part-Time Vision Screeners to join our team.

Are you looking for a role that provides you with flexibility, public health experience, and mileage reimbursement, all while serving your community? Apply today for our Part-Time Vision Screener role! This position is a great fit for those with morning availability who have a strong desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. No prior experience required.

Recently, three of our staff members (Grace Standridge- Director of Operations & Community Partnerships, Miranda Taylor- FocusFirst Director, Alexandria Means- HomeFirst Director) completed UAB APSTI's People-Centered Management micro-credential.

The six-part series is designed for professionals working in nonprofits and local governments who wish to increase employee engagement and improve workplace culture through management practices.

Participants learned ways to identify areas to improve the organization’s culture and employee engagement, concepts of recruitment, selection, compensation and benefits, recognition and retention, and performance management.

We are excited to implement what our team has learned! Thank you to UAB Department of Political Science and Public Administration & APSTI for helping us strengthen the leadership of our staff!

April Wrap-Up: FocusFirst Screenings in Alabama!👓💙

We are pleased to report that our dedicated team has successfully conducted screenings for a total of 1,026 children across the state. During these essential evaluations, we identified vision concerns in 63 children—issues that may significantly impact their academic performance and overall well-being. We are grateful to provide access to a resource children need to flourish.

FocusFirst is winding down our services for the spring season. We will only be holding a limited number of screenings in early May. We sincerely thank the schools, partners, families, and communities who have come together with us in this important mission. Your dedication truly makes a difference in the lives of these children.

We are currently planning our program year for 2026-2027, so get excited to follow along as we screen more children in Alabama!
