We are excited to announce that the SpeakFirst: Birmingham Urban Debate League topic for Fall 2026 has been released!

"Resolved: The United States federal government should enact a moratorium on hyperscale data center construction."

We can't wait to see our students debate both sides of this timely and relevant topic during our first showcase of the season on September 24th!

Additionally, we are now recruiting volunteer debate judges for the season! No debate experience required and training will be provided by SpeakFirst staff. If you are interested, please email [email protected] to confirm your spot.

HomeFirst Volunteer Financial Coaches needed!

We are actively recruiting volunteers to support our Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 HomeFirst cohorts! This is a flexible opportunity that's a great fit for those hoping to deepen their own financial knowledge while also working directly with individuals + families. Coaches are asked to attend 6 sessions with a participant (2 sessions per month for 3 months).

We are hiring a Part-Time Vision Screener for the Montgomery, AL region!

We are seeking a candidate to assist with the vision screenings for the Head Start and OSR programs. The Vision Screener will complete the required training, attend vision screenings in the assigned geographic region, and upload the results following the screening. The screening process is quick and non-invasive. Flexible schedule will average three weekday mornings per week, with an average of 3 hours per morning.

Please join us in celebrating our SpeakFirst: Birmingham Urban Debate League students and coaches as they return from Harvard University!

We are so proud to have our students represent Birmingham at the Harvard Debate Council Summer Workshops in Cambridge, training alongside 300+ debaters from across the country. Over two intensive weeks on Harvard’s campus, they committed to long days of learning, sharpening their Public Forum debate skills, and engaging deeply with complex, real-world topics. We are grateful to the Harvard Debate Council and Birmingham City Schools for investing in this level of growth—our students showed what discipline and hard work look like!
