Our friends at Faith in Action Alabama (FIAAL) invite you to add your name as a public signatory to a statewide letter calling on Governor Kay Ivey, Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, and President Pro Tempore Garlan Gudger to eliminate Alabama’s three Confederate holidays: Jefferson Davis Day, Robert E. Lee Day, and Confederate Memorial Day. These holidays honor individuals who fought to preserve slavery and stand in direct contradiction to the values of justice, dignity, and unity. In addition, these state-sponsored holidays undergird a narrative that legitimizes dismantling voting rights for communities of color and promotes socioeconomic policies that harm all low- and moderate-income Alabamians.
FIAAL states, “As people of faith and residents of Alabama, we believe it is time to end this practice. We will deliver this letter on June 18th, in recognition of Juneteenth, a day marking the end of slavery in the United States. As we take this step, we are also building support for the People’s Agenda; a set of community-driven priorities focused on justice, equity, and opportunity for all Alabamians.” The deadline to sign the letter is this upcoming Monday, June 15th. By completing this form, you are adding your name as a public signatory and indicating your support for forward movement in Alabama.
