Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do as leaders is listen.

Before jumping into a new project or offering a solution, ask your community partner one simple question: “What is already working?”

That conversation can reveal strengths, resources, and ideas we might otherwise overlook.

At the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, we believe strong community partnerships begin with listening, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn from one another.

Think back to your Fellowship year. The people you met. The conversations you shared. The challenges you worked through. The experiences that brought you together.

Whether your Fellowship year was recent or years ago, those connections are still worth celebrating.

At the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, we believe the relationships built through service are an important part of what makes this community special.

And sometimes, all it takes to reconnect is a simple message:

"Hey! I was thinking about our Fellowship year and wanted to see how you're doing!"

Some of the most valuable lessons in leadership happen when we take a moment to reflect.

At the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, our Fellows learn through service, community partnerships, conversations, and experiences that challenge them to think differently.

But learning doesn't stop when the activity ends.

The next time you finish a meeting, volunteer experience, or challenging conversation, ask yourself:

💭 What did I learn?

💭 What will I do next?

These three simple questions can help you recognize lessons, celebrate progress, and approach your next opportunity with greater intention.

Good health takes more than good healthcare. 💙

Think about someone who needs to see a doctor but doesn't have reliable transportation. Or a family whose housing situation makes it difficult to focus on their health.

These are everyday challenges that can have a real impact on health and well-being.

That's why community partnerships matter. The people and organizations closest to these challenges often have the greatest insight into what their communities need.

Thinking about applying to the Alabama Schweitzer Fellowship? Come learn what it’s really like from someone who’s doing it now!

Join us virtually Friday, October 9, from 12–1 p.m. and hear from Dhanvi Kantamneni, a Fellow from the UAB Dentistry, as he shares his experience with the Fellowship.

We’ll also talk about what Fellows do, who can apply, the application process, and how the Fellowship helps graduate and professional students turn their ideas for serving communities into meaningful projects.

“I serve because I believe the best way to create sustainable change is through modeling. As a board member I get to model how to invest in future health leaders.”
