Today we honor Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and a powerful reminder of our nation's history.

It is a day to celebrate freedom, reflect on the work that remains, and recognize the contributions and leadership of Black communities throughout Alabama and beyond.

We are grateful for the Fellows, alumni, community partners, and leaders who continue working toward healthier, stronger, and more equitable communities.

How are you honoring or reflecting on Juneteenth today?

πŸ’ Leadership means something different to each of us.

Today, we're featuring Dezirae Cunningham, a student at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy, as she shares her perspective on leadership.

Through the Alabama Schweitzer Fellowship, Fellows have the opportunity to grow as leaders while partnering with communities to make a meaningful difference. Along the way, they learn that leadership isn't just about titles β€” it's about service, relationships, and action.

How would you define leadership? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. πŸ‘‡

πŸ€” If you could invest in one future leader, who would it be?

🩺 A future physician
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ A future nurse practitioner
πŸ’Š A future pharmacist
🦷 A future dentist
🌍 A future public health leader
πŸ₯ A future health professional

It's a tough choice.

The good news? At Alabama Schweitzer Fellowship, we don't have to choose.

Every year, students from UAB, Samford University, Auburn University, Tuskegee University, the University of Montevallo, and other institutions across Alabama come together to learn, lead, and serve alongside community partners.

They bring different backgrounds, disciplines, and perspectives β€” but share a common commitment to improving the health and well-being of communities across our state.

When our supporters invest in ASF, they're investing in the next generation of leaders who will care for patients, strengthen communities, and help shape a healthier Alabama.

So tell us: Which future leader would you choose?

How does a fellowship experience change the way you see your future?

Watch this video from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy 2025–26 Fellow Kennedy Shoemaker as she shares what she learned during her year as an Alabama Schweitzer Fellow and how the experience helped shape her as a future healthcare professional.

Kennedy's project focused on improving patient education and access to resources at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services by creating easy-to-understand medication guides and resource materials for patients.

We're grateful for Fellows like Kennedy who use their talents to address real community needs and create lasting impact.

Take a few minutes to hear her story and learn what the fellowship experience meant to her. πŸ’™

Every pin on this map tells a story.

A story of a Fellow working alongside a community partner.
A story of service, leadership, and connection.
A story of communities coming together to improve health and well-being.

This year, Alabama Schweitzer Fellows are leading 17 projects across four Alabama counties in partnership with 14 community organizations.

But we're not stopping there.

One of the goals of our new strategic plan is to expand our impact across Alabama by creating new academic and community partnerships that allow us to reach more communities and support more emerging leaders.

Today's map shows where we are.
Tomorrow's map will show where we're going.

Where would you like to see Alabama Schweitzer Fellows make an impact next?

πŸ’™ Leadership looks different for everyone.

As part of our Fellow Leadership Reflections series, we're sharing how our Alabama Schweitzer Fellows define leadership in their own words.

This week, we're featuring Nar'Kiyah Butler, a student at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy.

Her perspective is a reminder that leadership isn't measured by titles β€” it's measured by how we serve, support, and inspire those around us.

What does leadership mean to you?

What happens when future physicians partner with a community to create opportunities for health, connection, and support?

For 2025–26 Alabama Schweitzer Fellows Sophia Fox and Grace-Anna Perry, it meant spending the year building relationships through a community-based Zumba program at Cahaba Medical Care – West End.

Their project provided free exercise opportunities, health education, and a welcoming environment where participants could connect with one another while improving their health and wellness.

In this video, the two UAB Heersink School of Medicine students share what they learned, the relationships they built, and how the Fellowship experience impacted them personally and professionally.

Watch their story below. ❀️

Every Alabama Schweitzer Fellow project is unique, but many of them are working to address the same larger community challenges.

This year, Fellows are partnering with organizations across Alabama to help improve:

πŸ₯ Access to Care
πŸ“š Health Literacy & Education
❀️ Mental Health & Well-Being
🌎 Community Inclusion & Belonging
🌱 Prevention & Healthy Living

These issues affect people of all ages and backgrounds and play an important role in shaping the health and well-being of our communities.

When we invest in community-centered solutions, we create opportunities for individuals, families, and communities to thrive.

Because stronger communities are built one relationship, one project, and one leader at a time.
