Also keep in mind — when snow accumulates, roads become much narrower. That makes it harder for fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles to safely get down residential streets.
If you’re able to, consider avoiding street parking altogether during and after heavy snowfall to help keep roads clear for emergency response. A little extra space can make a big difference.
In anticipation of yet another round of snow predicted for Sunday, the city is issuing a snow emergency parking ban starting on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 1 a.m. and lasting until Monday, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m.
If the city receives less than 2.5 inches of snow, the Department of Public Services will lift the parking ban early, since we do not plow when there is less than 2.5 inches.
During an emergency parking ban, it is a civil infraction to park a vehicle or allow it to remain parked on any residential roadway until the road is cleared of snow. Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed, with the vehicle’s registered owner responsible for the towing cost. No tickets will be issued to vehicles with a handicapped parking designation.
Please help make it easier for DPS to clear the roads by ensuring that your vehicle is off the street. Once we plow after the snow ends, we welcome you to park on the street again. Please do not shovel snow into the road or onto someone else's property.
Gates at the Chester Street Parking Structure (180 Chester Street) will be open for free access to help residents move vehicles off the street during the parking ban. For parking concerns, please call police dispatch at (248) 530-1889.
