Of all the things that made me so happy last night, the room filled with love and support, the volunteers who showed up and worked so hard, Detroit Public Schools for opening their doors to us, and Mr. Wilcox, the assistant principal of Groves High School showing up to lend support and thanks. However, there is one moment I have to share! I was on my way out the door and a mother and daughter approached me, everyone was gone it was just me and the security guard, they asked if I knew where the dresses were? I replied, it’s over for today but you can come back tomorrow and that there might be an another event in the next few weeks. They bowed their heads clearly disappointed but willing to come back. However, when I looked them both in the eye I could see it went far beyond disappointment. I said, “Come with me!”They followed me into the locked room, their faces lit up, and we went to town! They had the whole place to themselves. We chatted about how hard it was for them to get down to the school, how the mom was in a car accident last week, and the daughter was coming from a tough day at softball practice...immediately I knew that this moment is what reWEARable is all about. It started out as something my daughter Dani created because she liked to dress up but it has evolved into so much more even in the short time since it started in September. It’s helped me personally build relationships with new people and reconnect with some old. It’s brought me closer to my daughter, family, extended family, and our community. Yesterday was a shining example of how people can come together to create wonderful experiences for others. Sliding doors, I can’t imagine if I rushed off to meet friends for dinner like I was supposed to and not let the mother and daughter ‘shop’ after we had ‘closed up’. We connected, shared stories, exchanged phone numbers, and they plan to send us photos from the upcoming military ball the daughter is attending! She picked not 1 but 2 dresses which was pure joy to watch. They even took at beautiful wedding dress for a close friend that’s getting married soon. Thank you for letting me have this experience. I will always remember that yesterday was special but this was the icing on the cake! Xxoo
