10 years! I moved to Birmingham from Pennsylvania on December 26th, 2015. Back in PA, I always had a great outlet for my weird art, curating coffee shop art shows and participating in local punk rock flea markets. I figured if I needed that kind of outlet in Birmingham, other people probably did too.
I started a page: Birmingham Punk Rock Flea Market. Just a few days later, Charlie (who was working at Saturn at the time) reached out to ask if I had a venue yet. I definitely didn’t, I only knew like 4 people and used a Tom Tom to get around town!
Saturn was amazing and let us host the very first PRFM in March 2016 with about 20(?) vendors. https://fb.me/e/80vDCtFXw
I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the Punk Rock Flea Market over the last 10 years—vendors, performers, venues, and everyone who has ever attended. A special thank you to Saturn, TrimTab, Market by the Tracks, Avondale Brewing, and Cahaba Brewing. Y'all gave us the space to grow.
This is a big personal thank you to everyone that made Punk Rock Flea Market what it is. This landed me opportunities, friendships, and a husband (who I met at Saturn mixing sound for PRFM, we ended up getting married at Saturn too).
Here’s a picture of me from that very first market, taken by Jaysen Michael (who has been photographing the event every year since—thank you!). Hope to see everyone on October 4th. Please continue to support one another, this is what makes Birmingham so special!
