Birmingham Chapter of AAZK The American Association of Zoo Keepers is a membership association for animal care professionals to exchange information and network with one another.

AAZK Is a nonprofit (U.S. 501c3) volunteer organization made up of professional zoo keepers and other interested persons dedicated to professional animal care and conservation.

We care for our 3 incredible Sumatran Orangutans in which their species is Critically Endangered. Did you know? 🔸 Sumatran orangutans are the largest arboreal primate. They are s*xually dimorphic: which means males and females look different, with males typically about twice the size of females.

Happy World Pigeon Day pt.2 💙🤍

First Species Highlighted: Nicobar Pigeon, a Near Threatened species native to Indonesian Island and surrounding island regions. 🏝️ Did you know? They are the only living member of the ‘genus Caloenas’ , alongside the extinct spotted green pigeon and Kanaka pigeon, and is the closest living relative of the extinct dodo! 🦤

Second Species Highlighted: Pied Imperial Pigeon, native to Southeast Asia and surrounding island regions. Did you know? Because they travel relatively long distances, their flight muscles are larger and stronger than many other birds of a similar size. 💪🪶

Second Species Highlight; Green-naped Pheasant Pigeon, also native to the New Guinea regions. Did you know? They are classified in the Pigeon Family, but behaviors shown to like-and occupy-the niche of pheasants in the habitat, hence their name! 💚🧐

At the zoo we care for 3 American Alligators 🐊

Did you know? Rather than determining s*x with X and Y chromosomes like humans, alligators instead rely on incubation temperature. The trait called “temperature-dependent s*x determination”. ☀️ With estimated data stating that: 33C degrees will usually produce 100% males. 💙 While contrarily, 30 degrees Celsius (just 3 degrees different) gives 100% females. ❤️

Did you know? The life of a gopher tortoise revolves around a tunnel-like burrow that is excavated using its shovel-like front feet. Burrows can be up to 40 feet (12 meters) in length and 10 feet (3 meters) in depth.

Happy World Rat Day! 🐀❤️

Your Birmingham Zoo is home to three domestic rats who live behind the scenes in the Ambassador Department. All named for famous scientists, there’s Watson and Darwin, seen snuggling in their taco hammock, and Banks, seen with his festive fall photoshoot. The three of them live together and love to cuddle, play, and wrestle, just like any set of brothers! Rats are incredibly social and intelligent, and have lived alongside humans for thousands of years.
They can be found on every continent except Antarctica, because that’s the only place without a permanent human settlement! Rats can make excellent pets, but like with any pet, be sure to do your research to ensure that a rat is the right addition to your home.
Come by the zoo for a chance to see one of our rat boys at an Ambassador Animal Demonstration each day at 11:15 and 2:15, or at a random encounter around the park. Happy Rat Day! ❤️🐀
