Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund

Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund provides K-12 scholarships and empowers families to choose the school that best fits their child's educational needs.

The Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund (AOSF) is a scholarship organization formed to help implement the Alabama Accountability Act. The Alabama Accountability Act is a tremendous first step toward helping public education fulfills its potential of equal opportunity. At the very heart of this, legislation is providing better educational opportunities to children who need help the most. AOSF was

developed to provide educational opportunities to those families who otherwise could not afford them. AOSF along with the Alabama Accountability Act hopes to become a valuable component of education, empowering low-income parents and guardians to select schools that best fit their children's academic needs. Alabama's public school teachers and principals are doing heroic work. The fact is, however, not all children learn the same way or in the same environment. What works for one child may not work for another. This program helps alleviate the financial barrier for economically disadvantaged children so that they can find a school that works for them. AOSF will award scholarships to eligible, low-income students, to pay for private school tuition or transfer fees to a non-failing public school.

A major update just arrived for the Education Freedom Tax Credit.

The U.S. Treasury Department recently released preliminary guidance for the new federal tax credit program, giving states, SGOs, and taxpayers more clarity on how the program will operate when it launches in 2027. Treasury also announced that proposed regulations are expected later this year.

Because Alabama has already opted into the program, our state is well-positioned as implementation moves forward.

This guidance is another important milestone for a program that could expand scholarship opportunities for Alabama students and families in the years ahead.

The CHOOSE Act has changed the school choice landscape in Alabama—but the need for AAA scholarships hasn't gone away.

Every year, families across Alabama depend on scholarship opportunities to access schools that best meet their children's unique needs. While the CHOOSE Act provides new options for many families, AAA scholarships continue to serve students who need them most.

That's why tax-credit donations remain so important. Every donation helps expand educational opportunities and empowers families with more choices for their children's future.

School choice isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. It works best when families have multiple options available.

School choice in Alabama continues to evolve, creating new opportunities for families and schools alike.

Yesterday, our Executive Director had the opportunity to speak with leaders from independent schools across Alabama at the Alabama Independent School Association Leadership Conference. Together, we explored how the Education Freedom Tax Credit can work alongside existing programs like AAA and the CHOOSE Act to expand educational opportunities for students.

As Alabama's educational landscape continues to grow, our team remains committed to helping schools navigate these opportunities and connecting families with the resources they need to succeed.

When the right school feels out of reach, a scholarship can make all the difference.

Many Alabama families are searching for the best educational fit for their children, but tuition can be a barrier. That's where Alabama Accountability Act (AAA) scholarships help open doors.

While the CHOOSE Act has expanded educational opportunities across the state, AAA scholarships continue to play a vital role in low-income families access schools that meet their children's needs.

Every scholarship is more than financial assistance, it's an opportunity for a child to learn, grow, and thrive.

The latest numbers from Alabama’s CHOOSE Act tell an important story: demand for ESAs is still strong, but it’s changing.

New reporting shows nearly 30,000 new applications for the 2026–27 school year. While that’s lower than last year’s first-time applicant surge, the total number of applications has grown to nearly 49,000 when renewals are included. That shift highlights something we’re watching closely: more families are returning and staying in the program.

What does that mean in plain terms? Families aren’t just exploring ESAs, they’re continuing to use them as part of their long-term education plan.

At AOSF, we see this as part of a broader trend: Alabama families are actively engaging with education options in ways that reflect their child’s needs, not a one-size-fits-all system.

The new breakdown offers a clearer look at fresh interest in the program than the overall total, which now includes families already in the pipeline.
