Flat Florence took on Phoenix! 🌵😎

Our favorite traveling nurse joined the Alabama ENA State Council at Emergency Nursing 2026 in Phoenix. Between sessions, she grabbed her sun hat and shades and climbed up to Hole-in-the-Rock at Papago Park for a view of the Valley of the Sun.

We are heading home with new ideas, new connections, and plenty of energy to bring back to emergency nurses across Alabama. Thank you to everyone who learned, laughed, and represented our state alongside us this week.

We are so proud of Liana Hill, MSc, RN, RSCN, SANE-A, SANE-P, our Forensic Nursing Committee Chair, who presented "Beyond the Neck: Using the SHASTA Protocol to Identify Hidden Brain Injury in Strangulation" at the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP) conference.

Non-fatal strangulation is one of the most dangerous and underrecognized forms of violence, and it can cause serious brain injury even when there are no visible marks. Liana taught emergency clinicians how to use the SHASTA (Strangulation Hypoxia Anoxia Symptom TBI Assessment) protocol to recognize and document the subtle neurologic symptoms that are so often missed.

This is the kind of work that saves lives. Thank you, Liana, for being such a powerful voice for forensic nursing and for the patients we serve! 💜

🌵 Look who made it to Phoenix! 🌵

Flat Florence packed her lamp, her sunscreen, and her Alabama pride and flew out to join the ALENA crew at ! 💜

She has already:
✅ Checked in at the Phoenix Convention Center
✅ Cheered on our delegates at General Assembly
✅ Made friends with every emergency nurse she met (and a few cacti)
✅ Learned that "it's a dry heat" is not a medical diagnosis ☀️

This week, seven delegates from the Alabama ENA State Council are in Phoenix, Arizona, joining hundreds of emergency nursing leaders from across the country at ENA's General Assembly.

Our delegates are there to represent YOU, Alabama's emergency nurses, as members debate and vote on the resolutions and bylaws that shape the future of our profession and our association. From patient and workplace safety to practice standards and advocacy, the decisions made this week will reach every emergency department in the country.
