The 2026 Pediatric Readiness Nationwide Assessment closes May 31, and Alabama is sitting at a 38% response rate while the national average is nearly 62%. With less than two weeks left, we have a real opportunity to close that gap.

This assessment, endorsed by ENA and ACEP, gives every 24/7 emergency department a confidential look at how prepared it is to care for children. Highly ready EDs (as measured by the assessment) are associated with up to a 76% lower pediatric mortality risk. Participating departments receive a confidential score, benchmarking metrics, and a gap analysis — and the whole thing takes about 30 minutes at PedsReady.org.

From the ALENA Board of Directors:

Ada Doss, RN, was killed in the employee parking lot of DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa as she was leaving her shift. She was a wife, a mother of two young daughters, and a nurse who showed up every day to care for her community. Her loss is devastating, and it is not an isolated incident. Healthcare workplace violence has been escalating for years, and Alabama’s nurses, technicians, providers, security teams, and support staff have been telling anyone who will listen that the current safeguards are not enough.

A petition is now circulating in support of Ada’s Law, proposed legislation that would strengthen security protections for healthcare workers across our state.

The Alabama Emergency Nurses Association Board of Directors stands behind this effort.

Nurses do not get to choose who walks through the doors. We care for everyone, on their worst day, without exception. That is the job, and we are proud of it. But the people who do this work deserve to make it home to their families at the end of every shift. Ada should have made it home.

We are asking every ALENA member, every Alabama nurse, every healthcare worker, and every person who has ever been cared for in one of our hospitals to please sign and share this petition. Real change begins with our voices being heard together.
