⚖️ Know the Judgeships on Your Ballot!

Judges make decisions that affect our families, communities, and everyday lives. Before you vote, know the difference between the judges you elect!

⚖️ CIRCUIT JUDGES hear felony criminal cases, family law matters, and civil cases involving more than $20,000. They also hear appeals from district courts.

⚖️ DISTRICT JUDGES generally hear misdemeanor cases, small claims, and civil cases involving up to $20,000. They also conduct preliminary hearings in felony cases. Small claims cases handled within the District Court are capped at $6,000 or less.

Judicial elections matter! Understanding these roles helps you make informed decisions about who serves on the bench.

Every voter deserves clear information about the candidates and the offices they seek. Knowing who is asking for your vote—and what they would have the power to do—helps you choose who will best serve your community.

Did you know? Alabama has 105 state representatives and 35 state senators. House districts are smaller, giving you a representative closer to home. Both chambers vote on bills that can become state law.

Vote on November 3, 2026. The decisions made by the people we elect affect our families and our futures. They live in your district. Get to know them, and their priorities regarding your future.

CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY? YOU MAY QUALIFY TO VOTE ABSENTEE.

Greater Birmingham Ministries encourages everyone who can vote at their polling place to do so on November 3, 2026. But if work, travel, college, illness, disability, caregiving responsibilities, or another qualifying circumstance prevents you from voting at your polling place, you may be eligible to vote absentee.

Don't wait until the last minute!

If you qualify, download your county's absentee ballot application from AlabamaVotes.gov. Complete and sign the application, include a copy of your valid photo ID unless an exception applies, and mail it to your county's Absentee Election Manager. https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/absentee-voting #:~:text=A%20voter%20may%20cast%20an,a%20felony%20involving%20moral%20turpitude

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:
Monday, October 19 – Last day to register to vote
Tuesday, October 27 – Last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail
Thursday, October 29 – Last day to apply for an absentee ballot in person
Monday, November 2 – Last day to hand deliver an absentee ballot
Tuesday, November 3 – Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon

Once you receive your ballot, read and follow all instructions carefully and return it as soon as possible. The Alabama Secretary of State recommends mailing absentee ballot applications and completed absentee ballots at least two weeks before the applicable deadline.

IN-PERSON ABSENTEE VOTING IS UNDERWAY IN ALABAMA!

If you are eligible to vote absentee and are concerned that you may not be able to make it to the polls on November 3, don't wait until the last minute. Make your voting plan now!

Greater Birmingham Ministries has created a color-coded guide to help voters understand and complete the absentee voting paperwork for the November 3 General Election.

When completing your absentee ballot application:
1. Be sure to provide all required information
2. Select the reason you qualify to vote absentee
3. Sign the application
4. Provide the required photo identification.

After voting your absentee ballot, you must complete and sign the affidavit on the ballot envelope and have your signature notarized OR witnessed by two people who are 18 or older.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:
October 27: Deadline for absentee ballot applications returned by mail to be received.

October 29: Deadline to apply for an absentee ballot in person.

November 2: Deadline to personally hand-deliver your completed absentee ballot to your Absentee Election Manager.

November 3: General Election Day. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon.
