September is Spinal Cord Injury awareness month.

Over 75% of our athletes live with a spinal cord injury. Globally, in the sport of wheelchair rugby, quadriplegia/tetraplegia is one of the leading qualifying diagnoses for athletes.

At the USWRA, we are proud to work with multiple rehabilitation hospitals across the United States to provide those who have sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury an avenue to compete in sport again.

Head over to USWRA.org to learn more about how you can volunteer with a team near you.

This weekend in Philadelphia was about more than the final scores.

We began the tournament with Robbie on the court, represented by his chair, his jerseys, and the teammates who helped carry him across the goal line for one last score before he was substituted out for the final time.

From there, his presence remained woven throughout the weekend. Referees traded their traditional stripes for shirts honoring Robbie. Teams ended games by chanting his name. Photos and memories were shared, a ball was signed for his father, and the unmistakable “Robbie smirk” was mentioned more times than we could count.

We hugged a little tighter, held on a little longer, and did our best to care for one another while continuing to play the sport that brought Robbie into all of our lives. Our athletes competed hard, supported one another, and gave everything they had in his honor.

The weekend concluded with the presentation of the inaugural Robbie MVP Award. Following a deeply moving tribute from his coach and friend, Sarah, Robbie’s teammate Steven became its first recipient. It was a meaningful moment and a fitting way to recognize the impact Robbie will continue to have on this community.

We were also proud to welcome first-time player Tommy from Magee, who joined the Sloths for the weekend and did an incredible job. Even during such a difficult weekend, our community continued to make room for someone new and show what this sport is all about.

Congratulations to every athlete and team who competed this weekend.

Final Standings:

1. TIRR Texans
2. Irving Outlaws
3. MedStar Magee Eagles
4. Las Vegas/KC High Rollers
5. Sportable Possums
6. Sloths (TIRR and Friends)
7. Turtles (Brooks and Friends)
8. Grand Rapids Thunder

This was not a regular tournament, and it did not feel like one. But there is tremendous pride in the way this community came together with intention, compassion, and love. In honoring Robbie, our players gave their all to the game he loved.

We played for Robbie. We played for one another. And we made sure that smirk stayed with us all weekend.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robbie Dudzisz of the NEP Wildcats.

Robbie was a dedicated athlete playing for more than a decade for the Wildcat team. He also was a staple figure for the Magee-MedStar Low Point team. If there was a tournament in the northeast, Robbie was there.

He was an important piece of the back to back National Championships for the Wildcats, and had aspirations of making the National Low Point team.

He was a fierce athlete with a kind heart and an ever kinder soul, welcoming all new players into wheelchair rugby and making sure everyone felt like they belonged on the team.

We send our love to the Dudzisz family and the entire NEP Wildcats team. Robbie will deeply missed and will always remain in our hearts.
