"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." 🌱

Big thanks to this small group of volunteers who came out to Greenwood Park today for our Forest Friday tree maintenance! We were able to spread mulch across all 78 trees we had contractors plant this spring, which will help these young trees retain moisture during the hot summer. Shout out to Warby Parker volunteers from The Pizitz and Becca from Cahaba River Coalition for all your help today!

In addition to these trees, volunteers helped us plant 100 trees at this park in East Birmingham in March, making a total of 178 trees we've planted here this year! Did you know Greenwood Park has a unique history rooted in environmental remediation and community revitalization? This 34-acre park was constructed in 2012 as a massive stormwater management project to address industrial pollution in Village Creek, which is home to the endangered Watercress Darter.

Please join us for one of our Forest Fridays this summer! Next up, Highlands (AKA McMahon) Park in Ensley Friday, June 12, 9–11 a.m. Sign up on our website! (L!nk in comments)

We're so grateful to Cawaco RC&D for a grant to purchase a watering trailer, and many thanks to the Jefferson County Legislative Delegation for your partnership in supporting community-led projects! πŸ’§

Our new trailer will allow us to provide young trees we’ve planted across Jefferson County with the necessary watering they need to survive, especially during droughts or in areas without easy access to irrigation. This will have a huge impact on our sustainability efforts to mitigate urban heat islands where temperatures are significantly higher due to pavement, concrete, and minimal tree canopy, helping reduce temperatures and improve air quality and stormwater management.

Today we remember and give thanks to those who gave everything. Happy Memorial Day!

Urban Forest TLC: Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us last Saturday at East Lake Park to help us care for over 100 trees we've planted at Birmingham's largest park over the years! ❀️🌳 Volunteers spread mulch, pruned dead branches, weeded, and provided other maintenance, which is important for the long-term viability of these young trees. Special thanks to Grace Klein Community for providing snacks and to those who joined us from DC BLOX and our Advisory Council members representing Jefferson County Department of Health, Birmingham Park & Recreation, and UAB!
