The Environmental Defense Alliance (EDA) led a petition effort to successfully reduce toxins in Florida's waters!

Dec. 8, 2023 -- Prompted by a January 19, 2022 petition from the Environmental Defense Alliance and others (see below), today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published a proposed rule to establish new and revised surface water quality criteria for 73 toxic pollutants in Florida waters to protect human health. The EPA concluded that theState's existing criteria are not sufficient to protect human health from contaminants in water and fish consumed by Floridians. Click to read more.

EDA currently has several legal actions underway or pending:

1. EDA has filed an appeal of ADEM's refusal to disclose internal emails that contain alleged confidential and deliberative communications regarding toxic pollutant rulemaking.

2. Black citizens have oral arguments before the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals on April 11 seeking a decision that ADEM's discrimination complaint review policy is invalid for failure to adopt the policy as a rule with public notice and public content.

3. EDA continues to work on the discrimination against Black anglers who consume contaminated fish that is created by ADEM's toxic pollutant criteria. It is likely that EDA will file a civil rights complaint with EPA over this matter.

Items 1 and 2 both deal with lack of transparency at ADEM and should concern every Alabamian concerned about good, equitable governance in our state.
