[Irenaeus of Lyon]

What is the goal of counseling, care, and healing? What does health look like? It looks like us, being able to be fully present in our minds, bodies, and hearts, doing whatever it is we are called and gifted to do, according to the seasons and places of our life.

Sometimes we find ourselves looking for counseling and care when it is hard to feel "fully alive." We feel like we are living with our head on a swivel. Our hearts and emotions feel numb from pain or discouragement. We have difficulty moving forward because we feel bogged down in the complexities and challenges of living.

Counseling helps us move toward aliveness and depth as we learn to integrate our stories, our faith, and our feelings in the presence of an empathetic listener and guide (a counselor). By moving toward greater wholeness, we can experience the goodness of God more fully and become better able to commune with God, others, and ourselves.

Think about what our Christian formation often focuses on — we attend Bible studies, discipleship classes, listen to sermons, read books. All that is good and it matters! But sometimes we forget to include our physcial selves in the process.

"Too often we have approached our formation by concentrating on top-down (rational or mind-based practices) and have neglected bottom-up (body-based) or somatic practices." - Gordon Bals

Somatic practices help us reconnect with our physical selves, allowing our bodies to become partners in our spiritual growth — not just containers for our brains.

Many other church practices speak to this connection. A good hug from a friend, taking communion with our mouths and tastebuds, kneeling or bowing to pray — these sensory acts help us connect our hearts and minds with our bodies.

Counseling can help thread these pieces together as we seek to further integrate our stories, honor our bodies, and pursue lasting healing.

Instead of asking: “How can I change my body?” we should consider “How can I honor the body God has given me?” Some days...

Instead of asking: “How can I change my body?” we should consider “How can I honor the body God has given me?”

Some days, that may look like taking a brisk walk, or even going for a run (if you’re one of those weirdos who’s into that kind of thing…just kidding…kind of…). Some days, it might look like moving some weights. Some days, it actually looks like taking a rest day; letting a nagging injury heal, or even getting enough sleep. Caring for our bodies requires wisdom, knowledge, and flexibility (no pun intended), all while giving ourselves grace."

Wendell Berry passed away this past Monday, August 31. He was an insightful writer, thinker, and cultural critic from rural Kentucky who had a lot to say about how we tend to "mechanize" our lives and the world around us to achieve comfort, convenience, and progress.

His poem "The Real Work" encapsulates so much of what we try to do in counseling. When we reach what feels like a dead end, the work of counseling helps us see our hardships and heartaches as invitations into new ways of living with God, each other, and our own stories.

Is it easy to do the work? Of course not. But as we heal, the hope is that we begin to see our lives with greater depth, beauty, and gratitude -- our lives begin to "sing."
