Legal Aid Society of Birmingham

Legal Aid Society of Birmingham We provide court-appointed lawyers for children and low income adults in Jefferson County, Alabama

We are a community defender organization, providing lawyers for persons who are entitled by law to receive free representation. Most of our clients are children, who are presumed indigent regardless of their parents' financial status. Our limited funding is derived almost entirely from state and local funds; we receive no federal funding. Although Legal Aid is an affiliate with United Way of Centr

al Alabama, we receive no program funds from United Way as we are performing a governmental function and are thus not eligible for program funds. We offer no "intake" directly from the public, as all our clients are appointed by the courts where we work. We have no set income eligibility, as the judges decide if someone is indigent based upon information furnished to the court. We provide representation from the initial court hearing all the way through any post-trial appeals (yes, all the way to the United States Supreme Court if necessary!)
